The Washington Commanders remain hotly linked to wide receiver Stefon Diggs, and they are reportedly monitoring the situation. Nothing has emerged yet, but one team insider believes the veteran free agent will give general manager Adam Peters every chance to match any offer that becomes official.
ESPN's John Keim revealed that Diggs' first preference is Washington. That's no secret, but the longtime beat writer also reported that if another team were to pop up, the Commanders would know about it quickly.
That is interesting. And it only strengthens the chances of Diggs getting his dream homecoming to Washington before the 2026 campaign.

There may have been silence publicly, but Keim confirmed that Diggs and the Commanders have been in touch for a while. Some speculated that the interest was probably one-sided, as a move for the four-time Pro Bowler didn't happen before training camp, but that's not the case. And the need for another dependable veteran alongside Terry McLaurin is pretty evident at this juncture.

The Brandon Aiyuk talk has evaporated after the troubled pass-catcher continues to burn every bridge possible. Diggs has been quieter, working hard on his craft before the next opportunity arrives. The Maryland native and former Terrapins playmaker wants that to be with the Commanders, and Peters is being kept informed of developments.
If there is mutual interest, one has to wonder why this hasn't happened yet.
Maybe it's the money. Maybe it's the desire to get a good look at the wideouts around before making a confirmed judgment. Maybe it's taking stock of the baggage Diggs would bring and whether Washington's locker room culture is a good fit.
Maybe it's a combination of everything. But from a performance standpoint, Diggs represents an upgrade on anything Washington has outside of McLaurin.

Keim also thought it was telling that other potential receiver options are not believed to be on the Commanders' radar. Of course, that could change, but it does seem as if they have honed in on Diggs if the coaching staff decides that more is required.
Diggs would be a welcome boost to Washington's pass-catching corps. They are desperately short of dependability, and the stakes are too high this season for very few sure things. The All-Pro is coming off a 1,000-receiving-yard season with the New England Patriots, and he is confident even more could be on the way.
It would probably take more than the $7 million that Deebo Samuel Sr. received from the San Francisco 49ers to lure Diggs to Washington. Fortunately, the Commanders have $43.62 million in available salary-cap space, giving them room to sign the wideout with plenty left over.
There is legitimate smoke building around Diggs. The Commanders are keener than some thought, and the player has made his feelings abundantly clear throughout the offseason.
The stars may be aligning. And if the Commanders end up giving Diggs the green light, they would get better instantly.
