An underwhelming start to training camp for the wide receivers behind Terry McLaurin means the calls are now deafening for the Washington Commanders to finally pull the trigger on veteran free agent Stefon Diggs.
And for the first time, there are murmurings that general manager Adam Peters is keeping tabs on the tempting proposition.
ESPN insider John Keim revealed that the Commanders are continuing to monitor Diggs' situation. They want to be in the know, and the longtime beat writer believes that if Washington were to sign any remaining pass-catcher on the market, it would be the Maryland product.
"Right now, I think there is only one guy that Washington would sign, and that's Stefon Diggs. I would say they continue to monitor that situation. If you're monitoring it, it means you're in the know. We know he wants to play here. And we know Washington needs another receiver."

Diggs wants a homecoming. He's made no secret of that fact, and Commanders players such as K'Lavon Chaisson and Charles Omenihu have publicly supported the move. Nothing has materialized as yet, but it seems as if Peters is at least being kept informed of developments before the time comes to make a decision.
That might arrive quickly.
Training camps are underway around the league. Diggs is working hard to stay in shape, and he's eager to see what comes next. His production with the New England Patriots was impressive last season, especially considering he was coming off a torn ACL. And in terms of his career production, that speaks for itself.

With Deebo Samuel Sr. now reunited with the San Francisco 49ers, it only raises urgency for Peters to make a call about the receiver room. Keim's remark about Diggs potentially being the only viable option is fair. And the player is confident he can build on his 1,000-receiving-yard campaign last season as a complementary piece somewhere else.
There is baggage to consider. But compared to the delusions and antics of Brandon Aiyuk, who still seems convinced that he'll end up in Washington, they are minuscule. And with so much at stake for the Commanders this season, having as much dependability as possible is crucial for quarterback Jayden Daniels' growth.

Money should not be an issue. The Commanders have more than enough salary-cap space to sign Diggs without jeopardizing other moves. There is a good chance he is still intrigued, but Washington may not be alone in converting the four-time Pro Bowler.
At least five teams have checked in on Diggs, according to ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler. Someone will blink first and make their move. When that situation arises, Peters cannot get caught on the back foot.
Diggs just makes too much sense. And if the wideouts behind McLaurin on Washington's depth chart don't buck up their ideas at training camp, Peters may have no other choice.
