Much of the speculation right now centers on a potential move for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. However, there are growing murmurs that Stefon Diggs is also a possibility for the Washington Commanders as they consider another experienced pass-catcher for quarterback Jayden Daniels.
And when approached about the issue, Diggs didn't hide his feelings.
Diggs was cut after just one season with the New England Patriots, despite going over 1,000 receiving yards and helping them secure the AFC Championship. This was down to off-field issues, but now that they have been resolved, interest in his services is expected to pick up.
Stefon Diggs fanned the flames over potential Commanders switch
Speaking to reporters at his Diggs Deep Foundation charity event, the wideout acknowledged that a homecoming would be a tempting proposition if the interest was mutual. It also sounded like Diggs was going to ask whether Washington would be willing to give him a shot, but he's also planning to take his time before deciding on the next path.
"I'm familiar with the city and familiar with the people, so we're going to see down the pipe over these next couple of months what looks good and what makes sense. I definitely wanna shed some light on them and might go check them out for a little bit, you know. It's love. It's home town, so it makes sense."
Defensive lineman Charles Omenihu was actively trying to recruit Diggs on social media soon after his not guilty verdict in court. It's not known whether the Commanders are seriously considering signing the Maryland product, but it wouldn't be the worst idea.
There are concerns about his attitude, especially when things aren't going well. Diggs must buy into the culture as a complementary piece rather than a true WR1 at this stage of his career. If he does, and the money works for all parties, it becomes a lot more feasible.
General manager Adam Peters might be content with what he has currently. He may be willing to wait around for Aiyuk, but that could take months. There are also other options available, including re-signing Deebo Samuel Sr.
Diggs was clearly intrigued by the opportunity to join the Commanders. The emotional attachment is there, and playing closer to home is always something veterans prefer when they enter their career twilight. But until Washington officially throws its hat into the ring, it's nothing more than a not-so-subtle plea from the player's standpoint.
If Peters believes it's the right thing to do, he won't hesitate. But it's a guessing game until further notice.
