Commanders minicamp warning may force Adam Peters to stop waiting

The concerns are obvious.

Rumors are swirling around the Washington Commanders potentially adding to their wide receiver room at some stage before the 2026 campaign. And a notable sign from mandatory minicamp may expedite the process when push comes to shove.

The Commanders are confident in what they have behind Terry McLaurin, who is the only dependable performer right now. Washington is giving chances to its young pass-catchers over offseason workouts, but veteran Van Jefferson Jr. stood out above the rest at minicamp.

That's encouraging from his standpoint. But for team insider Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic, it's a massive concern.

Commanders WR problem could force Adam Peters into drastic action

Jhabvala noted the lack of execution from the receivers, especially on Day 1. And with growing signs that the San Francisco 49ers will release Brandon Aiyuk before training camp, the painfully obvious is becoming increasingly real.

"The Commanders didn’t do much to placate any concerns about their pass catchers. [Dan] Quinn spread the team out across two fields for 11-on-11 drills to give the players who received fewer reps more time. But the results on both fields were … not great.

"Drop after drop after drop from the receivers and tight ends — all while Brandon Aiyuk continued to post subliminal messages on social media amid his feud with the 49ers."

This is a problem. A big problem.

Aiyuk wants to reunite with quarterback Jayden Daniels in Washington, but until he's released, the Commanders will sit tight. Stefon Diggs is another who's reportedly keen, and he's available right now. Whether Peters will eventually give him a call is anyone's guess, but it may not be much longer before another team makes an approach.

There were some impressive flashes from the receivers. Head coach Dan Quinn also praised Dyami Brown and undrafted rookie Jaden Bradley for having a strong minicamp. Still, the concerns about this group weren't exactly alleviated before the pre-summer break.

If Jhabvala sees it, so does Peters.

The Commanders need to bounce back next season. There is no room for passengers, and everyone must meet expectations. After some encouraging signs at OTAs, things took a step back for some in the receiver room at minicamp. And this could prompt Peters to take more drastic action in the weeks leading up to training camp.

Perhaps will decide to stand pat. But that already looks like a massive gamble that could go either way.

Aiyuk is no sure thing, having missed so much football time due to a serious knee injury. Diggs comes with baggage, but he's still highly productive. If either reached the anticipated production levels, they would be an instant upgrade over anything other than McLaurin.

It's time for Peters to stick or twist. And there is just no telling which way he will go.
