Arguably, the hottest debate around the Washington Commanders right now centers on the wide receiver position. Some are speculating that Brandon Aiyuk will reunite with quarterback Jayden Daniels. Others want Stefon Diggs, who is available right now.
But one Washington analyst wouldn't be complaining if both came on board.
Aiyuk is reportedly keen on joining the Commanders. But unless general manager Adam Peters offers a draft pick to expedite the process, it seems unlikely that the San Francisco 49ers will let him leave until it is absolutely necessary. Diggs has also hinted at his interest in a homecoming and plans to explore the possibility in the near future. However, there is no telling if Peters will be receptive right now.
Commanders analyst could see both Brandon Aiyuk and Stefon Diggs in Washington
The Commanders are reportedly looking for help at receiver. Peters has $43.73 million in cash to spend if he chooses. And if Washington ends up with both Aiyuk and Diggs, that'll be just fine with Kevin Sheehan of 106.7 The Fan.
"I'm interested in both. Obviously, we don't have all of the information. You've gotta trust that Adam Peters, Lance Newmark, they're all looking into those items that we're not able to decipher in a decision-making process. If they were to sign, my assumption would be that they are getting a player that's motivated, healthy mentally, physically, and ready to roll. If they ended up signing both of them, I'd feel good about it."
This would be akin to dropping a power keg into the Commanders' mwideout dynamic. But a starting trio of Aiyuk, Diggs, and second-team All-Pro Terry McLaurin could make a massive difference.
Of course, there are risks. Aiyuk hasn't played since midway through the 2024 season, and if the Niners continue to keep him against his will, it'll hinder his ability to get the right work in before the season. Diggs was productive for the New England Patriots in 2025, but he's got a history of making things difficult when things aren't going his way.
It would be a gamble for the Commanders. Even so, the urgency to make improvements with pressure building means it cannot be completely dismissed if the money works.
There isn't much proven production behind McLaurin. The likes of Luke McCaffrey, Treylon Burks, Jaylin Lane, and third-round rookie Antonio Williams may break out, but that is no guarantee whatsoever. Aiyuk and Diggs are no sure things, either. But from a talent perspective, they represent upgrades at the peak of their powers.
What Peters needs to figure out is whether there is room for both and whether it could help or damage the established culture under Quinn's guidance.
And nobody outside the building has the first idea what the Commanders are thinking.
