Brandon Aiyuk's situation with the San Francisco 49ers has descended past bitterness and into another realm of precedent. It's player power versus contractual obligations, and neither side is budging. He might want to join the Washington Commanders, but the NFC West club is not going to make things easy.
And one Niners' analyst believes this is a problem neither head coach Kyle Shanahan nor general manager John Lynch needs any longer.
San Francisco has clearly moved on. Mike Evans and Christian Kirk arrived in free agency. The Niners spent the No. 33 overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft on De'Zhaun Stribling. They already have Ricky Pearsall, so Aiyuk's presence is nothing more than a distraction at this point.
And yet, their stance on Aiyulk remains unchanged.
49ers analyst calls for end to Brandon Aiyuk saga as Commanders lurk
They are holding out for a trade offer, which probably won't arrive. Lynch almost begged someone to give him a call during his post-draft media availability, affirming his intent to drag this out for as long as possible. ESPN insider Adam Schefter revealed the wideout is being difficult, refusing to speak with other teams about reworking his contract.
It's a complete mess, and the Commanders can do nothing but wait if they are intent on reuniting Aiyuk with quarterback Jayden Daniels.
Sam Lubman of 95.7 The Game in San Francisco thought this drawn-out saga had gone on for long enough. The Niners don't want him, and Aiyuk doesn't want to be there. Everyone made their point and dug in their heels. But the analyst believes now is the time to cut the cord.
"Clearly, the Niners are holding him hostage at this point, and I really don't understand the purpose why. What good does it do, keeping him a part of this organization? He clearly doesn't want to be here. You clearly don't want him to be here. Where is there a Niner fan out there saying, 'yeah, try and make it work out with him?'
"Everybody wants both sides to part ways here, and this stubborn stick your flag in the sand stance the 49ers are doing with him, it makes no sense. It makes no sense to keep him on this roster. It makes you guys look bad."
"What the 49ers are doing with Brandon Aiyuk -- you're not getting your way. Give up. Punt. Let him go. Can we please move on? This is ridiculous."@slubman59 has HAD IT with Brandon Aiyuk, and wants the 49ers to cut him ASAP (via @MorningRoast957) pic.twitter.com/PpgfyLNq3v

Lubman is not alone in his opinion. San Francisco isn't coming out of this looking good, and neither is Aiyuk. It's toxic, bitter, and everything in between — a complete relationship breakdown that left everyone feeling they had been wronged when there is plenty of blame to go around.
The Commanders don't want to trade for Aiyuk. They know finding a trade partner will be almost impossible if the Arizona State product is unwilling, so it's a waiting game for them. Ideally, the Niners will cut him after June 1, but they could easily wait until August 31, given his roster bonus isn't due until September 1.
Just what the point in that would be is anyone's guess, but they don't owe Aiyuk anything. They feel let down, and the player's contract means they are in a position to be as petty as they want until it is absolutely necessary to make a move.
And based on the resolute stance from both sides, this could go on for a while yet.
