John Lynch brings out the begging bowl as Commanders wait for Brandon Aiyuk

The desperation was glaring.

The Washington Commanders were firmly focused on finding the correct value during the 2026 NFL Draft. General manager Adam Peters put together a good class, which will hopefully improve their chances of bouncing back when the regular season arrives.

There remains one cloud hanging over Washington. The speculation around wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk's potential arrival shows no signs of slowing down. If anything, the buzz is building, but it's a waiting game until something becomes official.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network proclaimed the Commanders had significant interest in the pass-catcher, but they are not going to trade for him. Nothing happened during the draft, leading to yet another plea from San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch after the selection process concluded.

John Lynch desperately tried to drum up Brandon Aiyuk interest amid Commanders buzz

Lynch was inevitably asked about what the plan is for Aiyuk during his post-draft media availability. He implored anyone with interest to give him a call, even holding up his phone to emphasize the point. However, the stance about waiting longer to release him remains the same.

"We're available. Give us a call. Like I said earlier, I think it's the prudent thing to do. He's an extremely talented player. He's an extremely effective player. The situation didn't work itself out here. That's not to say it can't be rekindled somewhere else, and we'd be happy to do something with anyone if the opportunity presented itself."

Desperate times call for desperate measures. This was akin to Lynch getting out the begging bowl in a last-ditch attempt to pique someone's interest in Aiyuk. But deep down, he probably knows what the end of this saga will be.

And no amount of stalling will change that fact.

The Commanders want Aiyuk. The former Arizona State standout wants to join Washington, reuniting with his close friend Jayden Daniels. That is pretty common knowledge, and the salary-cap numbers attached to the final three years of his deal make finding a trade suitor extremely difficult.

The Niners are not making it easy for Aiyuk, which is their prerogative. They know he's played his final down for the club, but they want to save some blushes by getting something back in return. His roster bonus is reportedly not due until September 1, so this could go on for a long while yet if they want to be especially petty.

For Washington, this has now become a game of chicken.

Peters added Antonio Williams to the receiver room in the third round, which brings significant intrigue. If Aiuyk comes, and he can somehow get back to his old pre-injury form, that will help considerably. But the Commanders are not going to trade for the privilege.

And despite Lynch's attempt to drum up interest, nobody else in their right mind will either.
