The Washington Commanders are mere hours away from taking what will hopefully become their next franchise cornerstone at No. 7 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. General manager Adam Peters will have a shortlist, and he'll be ready to strike with conviction based on the team's assessments.
And he must get it right.
That is the primary focus above all else. Even so, there is one lingering cloud hanging over the Commanders that Peters will be keeping a close eye on as well.
Brandon Aiyuk.
Commanders will keep tabs on Brandon Aiyuk, but a trade remains unlikely
The San Francisco 49ers are looking to trade Aiyuk, sooner rather than later. General manager John Lynch revealed that conversations had taken place with potential suitors, but nothing concrete had emerged as yet. He acknowledged getting something done during the draft is unlikely, but that won't stop them from trying.
At this point, they'd be willing to accept anything.
A 2027 seventh-round pick? You've got a deal. If they can get a Day 3 selection to use this year, all the better. That should be considered a win at this point, but the reality may be far different when it's all said and done.
Peters will have half an eye on the Ayuk situation, one suspects. He knows the wideout wants to join Washington, and he also knows that quarterback Jayden Daniels wants him here. The Commanders are reportedly warming to the idea, but they are reluctant to take on the contract and part ways with draft capital to finally end this drawn-out soap opera once and for all.
Whether Peters will change his mind if he hears that a team has altered its thinking about Aiyuk is anyone's guess. He would be an asset, but his 1,000-yard receiving season of 2023 was a long time ago, and he's barely played since then. Stranger things have happened, but the risks far outweigh the rewards until further notice.
Aiyuk is staying quiet. That's the smart play. Saying anything at this juncture would only increase the Niners' bitterness. He'll probably have a lot to talk about when his next destination is confirmed. But even then, nobody will probably ever know what really went down.
Peters will have a better lay of the land than most. He's well-connected to people in San Francisco. Aiyuk's best friend is Washington's franchise quarterback. Whatever conclusions are reached won't affect his draft strategy, but he'll probably have someone keeping tabs on any developments.
And if the Niners don't get an offer, the saga will continue.
