The Washington Commanders, and everyone else around the league, are firmly focused on the 2026 NFL Draft. However, another situation is being closely monitored by fans.
That, of course, is the saga between wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and the San Francisco 49ers.
It's common knowledge that Aiyuk's preference is to reunite with quarterback Jayden Daniels. The Commanders are reportedly warming to the idea of giving him a shot, but that is unlikely to be via trade. The Niners are holding out for something in return, but even general manager John Lynch is starting to see this situation for what it is.
Commanders waiting patiently as John Lynch hits realization over Brandon Aiyuk
During his pre-draft media availability, Lynch acknowledged that the chances of moving Aiyuk before or during the draft were unlikely. He's had discussions with other teams, but if nothing concrete emerges, San Francisco will reevaluate things once the draft concludes.
"I've had some discussions. Do I think it's a high probability? Likely no. But is there a chance? Yeah, I think there's a chance.
"So, I think we'll see it through here. We'll focus on our draft. If something happens there, great. If not, we'll reevaluate it. He's still a member of this roster right now, and we'll treat him as such."
Nobody believes Aiyuk will be dealt. His serious knee injury, which kept him out of the entire 2025 campaign, is a major red flag. The salary-cap hits on the final three years of his deal are too much for any team to take the plunge. And considering how difficult it may be to rework his contract, it seems like a non-starter.
The Niners are well within their right to drag things out. As Lynch stated, he's still on the team and under contract. Aiyuk's roster bonus isn't due until September 1, so they could hold onto him all summer if they want to be especially petty.
Just what the benefits of that would be is anyone's guess. This has already become an unnecessary distraction, with both sides cutting off contact in a relationship that has gone way past breaking point. Once June 1 arrives, that's when releasing him becomes more feasible, and the Commanders are simply biding their time.
General manager Adam Peters will likely add to the wideout room in the draft. If Aiyuk also arrives, great. But expecting him to return to his 1,000-yard production after so long out of action is incredibly risky.
Lynch is starting to realize there is only one viable outcome to end this drawn-out affair. And once the cord is cut, that's when the Commanders can swoop.
Which seems like a foregone conclusion at this point.
