The Washington Commanders are reportedly looking for receiver help. They lack a legitimate No. 2 option opposite Terry McLaurin, with those behind the second-team All-Pro on the depth chart currently without either experience or proven production.
Brandon Aiyuk remains the hottest name, though momentum is building around Stefon Diggs. Whether the Commanders will investigate that possibility in greater detail remains to be seen, but quarterback Jayden Daniels wants to reunite with his close friend and former college teammate at Arizona State.
Just when that'll happen is a big talking point. The San Francisco 49ers are holding firm in their stance, refusing to gift-wrap Aiyuk for Washington. And with his roster bonus not due until the first game week of the 2026 season, they could hold onto him for months yet.
Commanders caught in a dangerous waiting game with Brandon Aiyuk
John Keim of ESPN thought this put the Commanders in a predicament. A former executive speaking to the team insider believes waiting would be hard to justify, given how much time he's missed and what's at stake for Dan Quinn. But if they can somehow get him earlier, that will improve the wideout's chances of making an immediate impact.
"But if [Brandon] Aiyuk can't join a team until, say, late August it would be nearly two years since he even practiced, let alone played. Add to that, he'd have to learn a new offense. For a staff that could be coaching for their futures, one former executive said, it would be hard to wait for potential contributions.
"On the other hand, if Aiyuk is signed earlier and plays well, there is a better chance Washington could re-sign him to a bigger deal after the season."
It's a game of cat and mouse. The Niners and Commanders both know that Aiyuk's preference is to join Daniels in Washington. But unless Peters changes his stance about sending over a draft pick to trade for him, San Francisco can make this as hard as they like.
If Aiyuk was guaranteed to get himself back to anything like his 2023 form, trading for him would be a no-brainer. But a serious knee injury forced him to miss the entire 2025 campaign, making him a risky addition until proven otherwise.
Nobody is budging. Aiyuk is reportedly refusing to speak with any interested parties about renegotiating his contract. The Niners haven't received any concrete offers worth considering yet, and that is unlikely to change. And the longer it drags, the less chance he has of silencing the doubters next season.
Fans are becoming frustrated on both sides. But the lines in the sand have been firmly drawn.
