The Washington Commanders have made a ton of impressive moves throughout the offseason. General manager Adam Peters was aggressive in free agency, and the front-office leader managed to find some real value with his six selections in the 2026 NFL Draft for good measure.

That put fans at ease, but the hard work is only just beginning. And one longstanding team insider revealed the area Peters is possibly targeting arguably more than any other in the near future.

It's no secret that there are concerns around Washington's receiver room behind Terry McLaurin. Whether it's fans or analysts, they all come to the same conclusion. They don't believe the Commanders have enough, and it's something Peters must rectify at the earliest possible opportunity.

ESPN insider outlines league concern over Commanders' wide receiver unit

ESPN insider John Keim, citing multiple league sources, including former coaches and executives, took the NFL's pulse. The consensus was that Washington needed a legitimate No. 2 wideout opposite McLaurin. What the Commanders need to figure out is whether that should come from another arrival or from a breakout star emerging within.

"Multiple league sources, as well as former coaches and executives, acknowledge the Commanders could use someone else alongside [Terry] McLaurin, their top target since he entered the NFL as a third-round pick in 2019.

"They could opt for someone not currently on the team -- whether that's waiting on Brandon Aiyuk, who isn't yet available, or Stefon Diggs, who is free. Or they could opt for internal development, hoping that third-round rookie Antonio Williams emerges early."

This is precisely what Commanders fans have been saying all offseason.

Washington cannot be overreliant on McLaurin again, especially given that he suffered so many injury problems during the previous campaign. There is a chance players like Luke McCaffrey, Jaylin Lane, Treylon Burks, and Dyami Brown can raise their performance levels, but that's not guaranteed. Hype is soaring around third-round pick Antonio Williams, but asking him to be a WR2 right out of the gate is unfair.

Peters has money to spend in free agency to address this potential problem. Brandon Aiyuk is the obvious candidate. However, he is still under contract with the San Francisco 49ers, and there are no signs that this bitter feud will end anytime soon. Stefon Diggs is intrigued by a homecoming, but the Commanders have not shown any legitimate interest as yet.

It's an interesting dilemma. The Commanders may want to take a good look at what they have right now. Much will also depend on David Blough's plans schematically. But if Washington goes through with the receiver room as it stands, it represents a massive gamble that can be avoided.

Time will tell on all fronts...
