The Stefon Diggs bandwagon is rolling like never before. Reports now suggest that the Washington Commanders are monitoring his situation, and an indifferent start to training camp from the wide receivers only lends weight to the potential arrival.
One of the arguments against Diggs joining the ranks is that it would do more harm than good to the development of Washington's younger wideouts. The Commanders are looking to draft and develop moving forward, and some believe the four-time Pro Bowler would get in the way of that.
But honestly, who cares?
Stefon Diggs would get the Commanders a lot closer to being more competitive
The Commanders have a significant amount on the line this season. They are coming off a 5-12 campaign and removed both coordinators in a bid to turn the tide. Pressure is building, at least from the outside looking in, and if Diggs gets them a little closer to being more competitive, general manager Adam Peters shouldn't hesitate.
If the fledgling breakout hopefuls were showing enough, this would not be a conversation. Unfortunately, that's not the case, so the Commanders shouldn't just stand pat for the sake of it if Diggs can provide short-term relief.
Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic, who was among the first to spot the vibes being off last summer, is among those endorsing a move for Diggs after what she saw over the first day of training camp. The insider is not alone, with ESPN's John Keim hinting that if the Commanders were going to sign another wideout, it's now down to the Maryland product.
Diggs himself has been receptive to the idea of a potential homecoming. At least five teams have checked in on his situation, so there might be some competition Washington needs to beat if Peters makes a firm offer. But not doing so just because it would upset some unproven pass-catchers further down the depth chart is an asinine notion.
The NFL is about winning. That's what moves the needle more than anything else. And the Commanders need to do a lot of it in 2026.
Unless there is 100 percent conviction in the options behind Terry McLaurin, the Commanders have to make another move. Diggs makes the most sense, and even though there is plenty of baggage that typically comes with him, this is a strong enough locker room to cope.
Money is not an issue. Diggs won't be asking for top-tier money, and the Commanders have enough salary-cap space to make him a good offer that works for all parties. And looking at the way Peters has gone about his business so far, he will not be taking the feelings of players who haven't proven anything yet into his thought process.
Just get it done. It's beyond time.
