Dan Quinn will be under enormous pressure from the moment the first football is kicked to begin the 2026 campaign. And the Washington Commanders head coach was done no favors whatsoever by the NFL with a brutal opening to the schedule.
Simply put, how the Commanders perform will cool things off for Quinn or completely melt his hot seat within just a few short weeks.
That might sound dramatic, but the importance of getting off to a fast start cannot be overstated. Looking at the challenges facing the Commanders over the first six weeks, the need to hit the ground running is painfully obvious.
Dan Quinn must get Commanders off to a hot start as pressure builds
Washington begins its campaign in Week 1 with a difficult trip to the Philadelphia Eagles. This will be followed by another road excursion to a divisional foe, with the Dallas Cowboys on the slate in Week 2. There will be a long way to go after that, but these NFC East battles will probably set the tone for what's to come.
If the Commanders were hoping for a slight reprieve, they're out of luck. Their home opener at Northwest Stadium in Week 3 is against the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. After that, it's an international game against the Indianapolis Colts at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. But there will be no bye for Washington in its immediate aftermath.
The New York Giants will be on deck upon their return to familiar surroundings in Week 5. If that wasn't enough, the Commanders also face a cross-country trip to take on the San Francisco 49ers for what should be a pulsating Monday Night Football showdown.
This is a murderers' row for Quinn to take on. Some analysts believe he is on the hot seat heading into the campaign. If the Commanders don't navigate some early tests successfully, the rumors around his future are going to reach levels not seen before.
Things will get slightly more favorable after that. Therefore, Quinn must get through the storm before their Week 7 bye with as little damage as possible. If he can do that, and the Commanders get a better run of luck on the health front, they'll have a shot.
If not, things will look increasingly precarious.
Quinn must have his men ready to go from the jump. Preparations must be exemplary over the summer, and everyone needs to get on the same page. The same bad vibes beat writers picked up on last year are not an option. Not with so much on the line.
And we're going to find out quickly what Quinn and the Commanders are made of when competitive action begins again.
