What an occasion this would be.

The Washington Commanders reportedly remain interested in wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, but they are not planning to trade for the player. With the San Francisco 49ers digging in their heels for a long, bitter standoff, it's hard to know when this drawn-out saga will reach a conclusion.

Most analysts and respected insiders still believe Ayuk will reunite with Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels. And based on a revealing NFL schedule leak, the league office and ESPN seem to think so, too.

According to Nerding on NFL, which has developed a fierce reputation for releasing games before the league at this time of year, the Commanders will travel to San Francisco in Week 6. The rumor also states that the clash will be shown on Monday Night Football.

Both are prestigious clubs, so a primetime status seems fair. But the potential of Aiyuk lining up against the Niners, after their relationship soured so badly, no doubt played into ESPN's thought process when picking this contest.

Of course, Aiyuk has to land in Washington first.

There is just no telling when that'll be if Peters stands firm on not giving up a late-round draft pick to speed things up. The Niners feel harshly treated by the player, and they don't want to see a dangerous precedent. And considering his roster bonus isn't due until just before Week 1, they could wait until then to remove him from the equation.

In this scenario, Aiyuk would have to keep himself in shape. But if he does join Washington, he'll have a few weeks to pick things up and gradually rebuild confidence before going up against his old employers with the national NFL audience watching.

And what a sight that would be.

There is a long way to go before then. The Niners still believe a trade partner can be found. Aiyuk's contract and his unwillingness to speak with anyone about reworking the deal make it almost impossible. General manager John Lynch once again pleaded with any interested parties to show their hand after the 2026 NFL Draft, but nobody bit on the bait.

One would think Aiyuk would pick up the phone if the Commanders called. He's extremely close with Daniels, and he knows Peters well from their time together in San Francisco. And the schedule leak pitting Washington versus the Niners in Week 6 should be all the motivation he needs to put in the work.

And make no mistake; this will be the primary storyline above all else if the chips fall where everyone expects at some stage over the summer.
