Brandon Aiyuk's $10 million move takes Commanders saga to bizarre new depths

Brandon Aiyuk seemingly lost touch with reality a long time ago. But his latest life choice confirms it.

The Washington Commanders remain Aiyuk's preferred destination when he is eventually released by the San Francisco 49ers. The rumor mill has died down on that front after some questionable activity on social media, with fans reaching breaking point after he threw shade at quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Even so, Aiyuk has supposedly bought a $10 million property in Loudoun County, Virginia, according to his latest series of Instagram stories. This is just 27.4 kilometers away from the Commanders' training facility in Ashburn, so it's not too hard to connect the dots around his thought process.

Perhaps this is just Aiyuk preparing for the next stage of his life, one that may not even include football unless he applies for reinstatement. This could also be a clear sign that the Commanders remain at the forefront of his mind, eager to join the club and prove there is still something left to give.

Unfortunately for Aiyuk, the reality might be far different.

The Commanders are reportedly still looking for receiver help. General manager Adam Peters has not made a move as yet, opting to bide his time. The landscape will be assessed over training camp, and if the young wideouts behind Terry McLaurin cannot show enough over the summer, the front-office leader won't hesitate to shake things up.

Just what Peters makes of Aiyuk's erratic behavior is the big question.

From a talent perspective, this would be a massive upgrade. Aiyuk hasn't played since Week 7 of the 2024 season, which is deeply concerning. But his actions on social media, attacking everyone with ill-advised criticism that has only tarnished his own reputation, might be enough to put off the Commanders from exploring the possibility.

Peters knows him well. Wes Welker is on the staff, who coached him in San Francisco. Daniels will also have a big say, but if there is any substance to their social media beef, signing Aiyuk when his turbulent stint with the Niners officially ends is absolutely out of the question.

Unsurprisingly, Aiyuk buying a house in Loudoun County caused a stir among the fan base. But instead of excitement about the possibility of joining the Commanders, which was in plentiful supply just a few short weeks ago, there is now a sense of empathy.

Nothing has been confirmed or dismissed. However, it's certainly a bold move for Aiyuk if he genuinely had the Commanders in his mind when making such a lavish purchase.

Was it for attention? Was it planning for the future? Was it a combination of both? We'll never know, but getting into the mind of Aiyuk right now is not a good idea.
