Everyone, from the fans to the talking heads on television and others in the media, has been waiting patiently for general manager Adam Peters to sign another veteran wide receiver to go alongside Terry McLaurin this offseason.
Nothing has emerged.
Peters is taking stock. He's assessing the landscape before deciding on further action. He is not one to jump the gun, and he is not a man who'll disclose his information to the public before it's absolutely necessary.
However, the improved depth at Washington's disposal could be enough to wait for a smarter addition a little later in the process.
Commanders' wide receiver depth could be a reason for Adam Peters' patience
Speculation about the usual suspects is slowly dying down. San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk's social media actions have turned off fans, and it may have turned off Peters as well. Stefon Diggs is working and waiting, but his homecoming desire hasn't come with any known interest from the Commanders' perspective.
They may be targets, but they may not.
Peters also has the luxury of seeing where things stand throughout camp before determining if the Commanders really have enough. Behind McLaurin, there is a group of young breakout hopefuls and reclamation projects looking to galvanize their careers. There is concern and optimism in almost equal measure, but Washington has faith in them all.
And if it's repaid over the summer, that might be enough to stand pat.
If it isn't, Peters won't hesitate to bring more changes. By that point, there should also be more viable options available for the Commanders as well.
Good players always get released when they don't quite make the grade elsewhere. Possible options on the trade market could become a lot cheaper when they fall out of favor. Options are thin on the ground right now, especially if the Commanders are looking for more than a short-term rental. But during camp or even at final cuts, that has the scope to change.
Peters will have a strategy in place. It will be fluid, but fans have no reason to doubt him after another impressive offseason when drastic measures were needed. If another signing arrives, that's great. But the Commanders also want to see whether any summer standouts emerge from the available options.
There are a lot of unknowns, of course. Nobody outside McLaurin has any consistent production to speak of. At the same time, the Commanders have tight end Chig Okonkwo and running back Rachaad White, two new signings who could become focal points in the passing game under new coordinator David Blough.
If that's the case, and McLaurin manages to return to his old self after an injury-hit 2025, the Commanders may only need complementary pieces to get over the hump.
And they have those in abundance.
