Stefon Diggs knows what will make or break Commanders' offensive surge

Stefon Diggs is here to win. And the veteran wide receiver believes that the Washington Commanders' offense is ready to surprise people with first-time offensive coordinator David Blough calling plays.

However, one critical element Diggs raised during his recent media availability could make or break the Commanders' hopes.

Diggs seemed bullish without being outlandish heading into Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles. It's also the sort of cautious optimism reflected in the fan base.

He's picked things up quickly after signing later in the summer, and his teammates have helped him every step of the way. A quiet confidence oozes from the wideout, but attention to detail and effective execution are crucial.

If the Commanders can do that, Diggs thinks they have a chance to be much more competitive.

"I don't want to put a ceiling on it, but we'll have to execute at a high level. It's going to take a lot of attention to detail. I can see that they've put in a lot of work up to this point, and it's going to come down to execution. Just winning, that's all I want to do."

Sounds simple, of course. But with a new offensive scheme, there could be a few growing pains at the start of the campaign.

Thanks to the hard work Diggs believes the Commanders' offensive players have put in this offseason, they also have a chance to hit the ground running.

Diggs has been around plenty of winning franchises throughout his career. He knows what it takes, and he wants the same in Washington.

But he is seeing some positive signs.

Getting it done when it counts will be much trickier for head coach Dan Quinn's squad in a make-or-break year for many.

The Commanders have a difficult start to the season, and the time for half-measures is over. Pressure will build quickly if performances and results keep faltering, and Quinn will be in the firing line. But even though Diggs won't solve every problem, he should get Washington a lot closer.

The former Maryland standout had other offers, but he chose Washington. While the homecoming element was no doubt important for Diggs, he also believed in the project and quarterback Jayden Daniels. And based on his seamless transition into the organization, he's got the scope to make a big difference alongside Terry McLaurin in the Commanders' receiver room.

While Diggs has lost some explosiveness, he remains highly productive. And the elite-level mentality hasn't gone anywhere, either.

The four-time Pro Bowler went over 1,000 receiving yards on a snap count with the New England Patriots last season, helping them win a Super Bowl. Diggs was also praised for his willingness to lead and mentor younger players, which was all the Commanders needed to hear before taking the plunge.

Diggs feels healthier and stronger now, which will benefit the Commanders if he can stay on the field.

You could tell Diggs was looking forward to showing the NFL what this offense is really capable of. And if everyone executes their assignments effectively, it's all systems go.
