The message was clear.

The Washington Commanders are taking a big risk by moving forward with David Blough as their new offensive coordinator. He's got no play-calling experience and was only a position coach for a few weeks after Tavita Pritchard left for Stanford, but Dan Quinn is confident in his vision to run a more pro-style system that could greatly benefit quarterback Jayden Daniels.

This was the big reason why the Commanders canned Kliff Kingsbury after two seasons. Fans are approaching Blough's arrival with nervous excitement. Even so, there is at least alignment in the building that should serve them well heading into a crucial offseason.

The pressure is on, of course. At the same time, the Commanders could get themselves ahead of the game if Blough becomes what they expect in the years ahead.

David Blough plans to make Commanders' offense more creative and aggressive

Blough got the chance to set out his stall during his introductory media availability. The softly spoken coach is extremely driven. There is a plan in place that centers on creativity and speed. Washington's new play-caller also wants to keep defenses guessing, something his predecessor failed to do effectively.

"When people turn on the tape, they’re going to see a play style that is recognizable across the NFL. That's one thing that I want to come to life. It's DQ's [Dan Quinn] vision — speed and violence that our offense is going to run off football with. I think they're going to see a creative and competitive group. We're going to make the same things look different and different things look the same, which can cause a little bit of stress for a defense. I think there are some cornerstones and benchmarks that we will hit along the way, but I've got a vision in mind."

Getting some top stars healthy and improving the offensive personnel is crucial. Blough will lay out his scheme to general manager Adam Peters, and he'll find the pieces needed to slot into it. The Commanders had to try something new, and if this diverse, pro-style scheme is what it takes to get Daniels to the next level, it's a small price to pay for progress.

There won't be anything flashy about Blough. He's an unassuming character who goes about his business without much fanfare attached. However, the rave reviews he's received from respected offensive minds around the NFL since his appointment speak volumes.

And unlike his approach at previous stops, Quinn reacted quickly to prevent a highly regarded coach from leaving the building.

There will be changes; plenty of them. But after a campaign that promised dreams of winning the Super Bowl and ended with just five wins, nobody should be complaining too much about that.
