It took one training camp practice for Treylon Burks to change Commanders' mood

The Washington Commanders are confident that someone can step up behind Terry McLaurin in the wide receiver room. And while it was only the first day of training camp, one fledgling hopeful wasted no time in making a positive impression.

According to those in attendance, it was a positive day for Treylon Burks. The gifted pass-catcher looked sharp and produced one of the more notable highlights in red-zone drills with a stunning touchdown grab.

For Burks, it's all in a day's work. And whenever his number is called, the 2022 first-round pick will be striving with everything he has to deliver the goods.

"We're just coming out here competing, trying to make each other better. When my name is called, I just wanna make plays."

This is just a small example of what Burks could potentially bring to the offense under new offensive coordinator David Blough. The former Arkansas standout's time with the Tennessee Titans fizzled out, but the Commanders believed there was something to salvage. After flashing promise last season, he got another one-year deal that could be worth up to $4 million with incentives.

More importantly, he was completely sold on Blough's vision. And there is an opening to become a bigger piece of the puzzle than fans initially anticipated.

There are no sure things outside of McLaurin. Tight end Chig Okonkwo and running back Rachaad White will play important roles in the passing game, but that won't be enough. The wideouts lower down the food chain in Washington must play their part, and Burks is a livelier candidate than most.

Obviously, this is only one practice. There is a long way to go and a lot of hard work ahead before Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Burks has built some encouraging momentum throughout the offseason. His imposing start to training camp only whets the appetite further about what he could accomplish with some newfound stability.

Burks just needs a bit of luck, a bit more focus, and a place to call home. The Commanders have given him the last one, but the first two are down to him.

Staying healthy is key. For every positive step forward Burks made in Tennessee, he took two steps back through injury. That has to change, but the problems have been minimal with the Commanders, and hopefully, this is a trend that continues long into the future.

There is no doubt Burks has always had talent. That's never been in question, and even though getting the job done in the regular season is all that counts, the reclamation project is now showing real signs of life.

And it'll be interesting to see where Burks goes from here.
