The Washington Commanders were forced to pivot when tight ends coach Ben Steele was let go. Fortunately, head coach Dan Quinn had a plan in place to ensure no momentum was lost.
And this represents an understated win for free-agent signing Chig Okonkwo before training camp even begins.
Quinn confirmed during his pre-camp media availability that Wes Welker will coach the tight ends moving forward. The assistant's title on the staff hasn't officially changed as yet, but it's something he did throughout Washington's mandatory minicamp when Steele was no longer around.
This move stands to benefit Okonkwo greatly.

Welker is a respected teacher. Before that, he was a two-time All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver who did his best work in the short to intermediate areas of the field. With 903 career receptions for 9,924 receiving yards and 50 touchdowns throughout his career, there weren't many better. And the knowledge he could pass on to Okonkwo will be invaluable.
Though Okonkwo is a tight end, he promises to be a focal point in the passing game within offensive coordinator David Blough's new system. He's fast, explosive, and a real threat with the football in his hands. The Commanders believe he can take the next step with quarterback Jayden Daniels leading the charge. And if Welker can provide him with the tools needed to create separation more effectively, the Maryland product is a prime candidate to take off in 2026.
Okonkwo won't be Welker's only priority. But make no mistake; he is the main one.
There isn't much Welker doesn't know about operating exceptionally from the slot. Steele is also a good coach, but Welker lived it on the field for 12 years. That commands instant respect in the locker room, and Okonkwo should be like a sponge over the summer, soaking up as much information as he can in pursuit of repaying Washington's faith.
The Commanders placed a decent wager on Okonkwo with a three-year, $27 million deal that came with $16.7 million guaranteed and a $7 million signing bonus. With the questions around Washington's wide receivers behind Terry McLaurin, he could become the No. 2 option if everything goes well. But delivering on his obvious promise is crucial.
Having Welker as his primary support system might go overlooked in the grand scheme of things. But if Quinn's gamble has the desired effect on the new TE1, it'll be a game-changer in no uncertain terms.
Okonkwo has the skills. He's got the athleticism. And now, he is finally in a place where his potential can be maximized.
And if this scenario becomes a reality for the player and the Commanders, Welker will have played a leading role.
