The Washington Commanders have secured a plethora of new additions this offseason. Some gained more hype than others, but one NFL analyst believes general manager Adam Peters pulled off a massive coup with one free-agent signing going completely under the radar.
There was almost no chance Washington was going to bring back Zach Ertz this offseason. Head coach Dan Quinn and Peters have not completely closed the door on the possibility, despite the veteran tight end currently going through rehabilitation for a torn ACL. However, their actions told a completely different story.
The Commanders needed a more athletic pass-catching option with long-term upside. Peters found it relatively quickly, signing Chig Okonkwo to a three-year, $27 million contract with a $7 million signing bonus and $16.7 million guaranteed. And if he reaches expectations, Alex Kay of The Bleacher Report thought this could be one of the offseason's best signings when push comes to shove.
Commanders' signing Chig Okonkwo could be one of the offseason's biggest steals
Kay highlighted Okonkwo's scheme flexibility as something that new offensive coordinator David Blough could scheme around. Couple this with his outstanding athleticism and experience, and the Commanders may have struck gold.
"Okonkwo is best used as a move tight end, one capable of motioning around the formation and lining up almost anywhere. Blough will be able to keep Washington's offense humming by scheming up ways to spring the 26-year-old free, putting Okonkwo in position to rack up first downs thanks to his YAC skills.
"By inking Okonkwo to a three-year, $27 million deal, the Commanders made one of the best under-the-radar signings of the 2026 offseason. He offers a rare combination of experience, upside and athleticism with his best football still ahead of him."
Ertz was highly productive as a dependable option for quarterback Jayden Daniels, providing assurance in the short to intermediate areas of the field and the red zone. But in Okonkwo, the Commanders have found a dynamic talent with significant ability after the catch. That is something the recent departure doesn't have at this late stage of his playing career.
This signing also aligns with what Peters has sought to accomplish this offseason.
The Commanders had to get younger. They had to inject more energy across the roster. They had to find players who could make things happen without relying too much on Daniels. Much has been made about the wide receiver room and whether more is needed, but Okonkwo could be a surprise that most don't see coming as a legitimate breakout candidate.
And given the way Blough's projected scheme is set to run, Okonkwo has the potential to be a real game-changer.
