The Washington Commanders gave Treylon Burks a chance to galvanize his career last season. Now, they want to see more.

General manager Adam Peters has re-signed several veterans before the legal tampering window opens. Not everyone is going to get a reprieve, which is expected after a five-win campaign. However, bolstering depth with proven experience gives him a solid foundation to build on.

Burks was probably anxiously awaiting his fate. As it turned out, the Commanders saw enough in the wide receiver to give him another go-around in 2026.

Commanders' faith in Treylon Burks must be repaid for a future beyond 2026

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Commanders have re-signed Burks to a one-year deal reportedly worth $4 million. That's well short of the minimum, so this modest yet notable financial commitment indicates that Washington's offensive coaching staff has big plans for the Arkansas product next time around.

This was the best-case solution for Burks. He never came close to meeting his first-round billing with the Tennessee Titans, with injuries denting his progress considerably. His physical attributes have never been in question. Consistently putting it together remains the issue.

Burks flashed promise after joining Washington. His sensational touchdown catch against the Denver Broncos was among the season's most memorable highlights. And unlike the veterans the Commanders have given new deals to so far, this also has long-term promise.

With a full offseason to familiarize himself with David Blough's schematic concepts and a better run of luck on the injury front, Burks could be in line for a profitable campaign next season. This won't stop Peters from identifying another prolific weapon via free agency or the draft, but it gives Washington a nice complementary piece that could potentially be something more if everything clicks.

This is a fantastic opportunity for Burks. He's a physical force, especially after the catch. The No. 18 overall selection in the 2022 NFL Draft has never gained more than 444 receiving yards in a season. But at 25 with some newfound stability and a coaching staff that genuinely believes in his capabilities, his fortunes may be about to change.

Sometimes, that's all it takes.

What comes next is down to Burks. Now is the time to grow into a productive on-field performer. It could still go either way, and fans shouldn't expect the second coming of Randy Moss opposite Terry McLaurin next season. However, at $4 million, it represents a risk worth taking for Peters.

For Burks, repaying this faith will be his primary objective. If he accomplishes this feat, the wideout can expect a longer-term commitment from Washington this time next year.
