It's not hard to see why some Washington Commanders fans have concerns about the wide receiver room. That is not an opinion shared by Terry McLaurin.
The veteran pass-catcher is highly confident that one of the young breakout hopefuls behind him on the depth chart is going to step up. And McLaurin will strive with everything he has to ensure they are ready to meet the challenge when the real action begins.
"Somebody's going to step up. Most of the guys are going to step up, and I think guys are going to be ready for their opportunities.
"We have guys who have played in the league, we have guys who have had success, we have guys who are just waiting for that opportunity to really show what they can do. As a leader, I'm just looking forward to help pushing the room, having them push me, as well, and I'm looking forward to see who steps up. Because somebody will."
McLaurin is watching these guys work every day. They are all looking to him for advice and inspiration, but he's also got a better sense than most of where things stand. If he has faith, that should be enough to appease fans.
Commanders' wideout situation remains precarious despite Terry McLaurin's bullish claim
For now, at least.
The proof will come during the regular season. McLaurin is the only sure thing, and even he missed considerable time last year due to injury. The Ohio State product is fully healthy now and ready to lead from the front. But unless someone else in the wideout unit rises to the occasion, the pressure on him will be too much for one man.
It's a fluid situation. General manager Adam Peters has taken a patient approach, but he didn't stand still either. Dyami Brown and Van Jefferson Jr. were signed. Antonio Williams was a third-round pick. While they are not earth-shattering names, they can be productive within David Blough's system.
Running back Rachaad White and tight end Chig Okonkwo also joined the Commanders this offseason. They promise to feature heavily in the passing attack, so this might not be as alarming as some are suggesting before training camp.
Obviously, the more dependable weapons quarterback Jayden Daniels has, the better in a crucial Year 3 of his professional career. The Commanders are in a precarious situation entering 2026, so nothing but improvements will do. McLaurin will play his part, as he always does, and his bullish outlook on the rest of Washington's receivers raises confidence.
Whether this group of possible risers and reclamation projects can justify this faith is the big question nobody knows the answer to right now.
