Washington Commanders fans were expecting general manager Adam Peters to add more firepower around quarterback Jayden Daniels at some stage during the 2026 NFL Draft. As it turned out, this came via the No. 71 overall selection in the third round.

Antonio Williams was the choice. And his former college coach sent his hype soaring with a bold proclamation about what the gifted pass-catcher could accomplish right out of the gate in Washington.

Williams is an intriguing player. He was projected by some analysts as a first-round pick before the 2025 campaign, but Clemson's struggles and injury problems saw his stock slide. Though he's been tabbed as a slot specialist in the pros, his slick route running and overall elusiveness make him a versatile piece for offensive coordinator David Blough to scheme around.

Dabo Swinney's believes Antonio Williams can thrive immediately with the Commanders

Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney was in no doubt regarding Williams' outlook in Washington. He believes this is an instant impact player with the determination, toughness, and intelligence to thrive. He's seen a lot of good wideouts in his time, but the former national champion believes Washington has something special on its hands.

"Antonio is a day one performer when he walks in their building. If he was 6-2, he'd be a first-round pick. He's different, but he is in the same class and category of all the greats that we've had come through here at that position.

"He's precise in what he does. He's tough, he's physical, and just a very, very smart football player. He's a high-value pick here. And I think he's a guy that right out of the gate makes a difference with his work ethic, with his toughness and with his ability to get open and finish on the ball.”

Swinney isn't alone. Several shrewd experts immediately call it a steal. They believe it's the perfect fit for Washington, adding a different dynamic and providing another useful asset for Daniels to depend on. Staying healthy will be key, and Williams isn't exactly the most physically imposing player, but the ceiling is enormous nonetheless.

What this means for others is irrelevant.

Peters cannot let anything get in the way of progress. He's moved with aggression and purpose this offseason. There was clear conviction in Williams' capabilities, and his elite-level work ethic won't let the incoming rookie take anything for granted when he gets into the building.

Williams has a lot to prove. The NFL is different, but the skill set is there for all to see. And if Swinney's projection becomes a reality, the Commanders will have one of the draft's biggest steals on their hands.
