Terry McLaurin is quietly giving the Commanders what they desperately missed

The vibes are different, and there is a reason.

Terry McLaurin was an innocent bystander last offseason as his contract standoff with the Washington Commanders went on much longer than originally anticipated.

There are no such complications this time around, and it's already having a positive effect.

McLaurin got his money in the end, but only when the deal suited general manager Adam Peters. He didn't last long before getting hurt, and the quad/hip flexor problem took longer than expected to get over.

It was the first time that expectations weren't met for the wide receiver. He's also putting in the work to make sure the same doesn't happen again.

Commanders insider notices something different, and it's down to Terry McLaurin

Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic, who was the first to rightfully note that the vibes were off last summer, is feeling something different this time around. That is thanks in no small part to McLaurin, who is setting the tone through work ethic and leading by example, helping other pass-catchers raise their respective performance levels along the way.

"Having [Terry] McLaurin back changes everything — the play of the offense, the versatility of the approach and the energy of the team as a whole. Maybe his presence stands out more this offseason because of his absence for most of last offseason, but McLaurin’s leadership was especially noticeable.

"It’s been noticeable for a while, thanks to social media clips of his workouts with fellow receiver Dyami Brown, a player McLaurin really started to take under his wing in 2024 before Brown departed for Jacksonville for a season."

As Jhabvala stated, this is typical of McLaurin's overall influence. Even more so this year, with a point to prove and murmurings about his uncertain status beyond the 2026 campaign.

There are many unknowns in Washington's receiver unit. McLaurin is the one constant, providing dependable production and legitimate WR1 talent. He didn't get to play much with quarterback Jayden Daniels last season, but all signs are pointing up now. And the former Ohio State standout is going above the call of duty to make sure everyone else follows the example he's setting.

Not having McLaurin around last offseason shifted the landscape more than anyone thought possible. These little things matter, especially where one of Washington's franchise cornerstones is concerned. Everything is rosy in the garden now, which only heightens expectations around a potential bounce-back campaign for the Commanders next season.

If McLaurin stays healthy, he'll be leading from the front. And based on early indications, every other young pass-catcher aiming to follow in his footsteps is willingly following him.

Just as it should be.
