Rumors are swirling around San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk's location. He's reportedly bought a $10 million property in Loudoun County, Virginia, and the 2023 second-team All-Pro is still convinced that the Washington Commanders will give him a shot when he is eventually released.
But could Aiyuk, a man not exactly known for making smart decisions, actually show up to training camp in Ashburn without a formal contract on the table?
It's a seemingly inconceivable notion. It would also be the most bizarre turn in this soap opera yet.

The Sports Junkies of 106.7 The Fan recently got a tip-off that Aiyuk was spotted having dinner in Ashburn, where the Commanders' team headquarters is based. Just what truth is in that, nobody knows for sure. However, Grant Paulsen is among the analysts who believe he could throw a curveball and show up to camp as a fan first.

That would be on the unrealistic side. But looking at the erratic way Aiyuk has gone about his business in recent weeks, it couldn't be ruled out completely.
Aiyuk desperately wants out of the Niners, who have kept him on the left squad list and still hold his rights. General manager John Lynch offered no hope this would change anytime soon, though he once again acknowledged that the Arizona State product is no longer part of the team's plans.
The wideout also needs to apply for reinstatement. Until he does, the questions about whether Aiyuk actually wants to play football again will remain. And that's without counting for his injury history or his questionable attacks on social media, which also included throwing shade at quarterback Jayden Daniels.
Turning up unannounced at Washington's training camp would be unprecedented, especially if the Commanders have no intention of signing him when (or if) they get the chance. Nobody knows for sure on that front, but the support among fans about this possibility has diminished significantly.
General manager Adam Peters will do what's right by the team. Daniels' opinion will be valued, and if there was any legitimate beef from their social media interactions, it's a non-starter. But the Commanders have not leaked that they wouldn't pursue him, either.
Aiyuk visiting the Commanders' facility would reek of desperation and only increase the Niners' resolve to make things difficult. But the fact that this is a real discussion just shows how weird things have gotten.
With training camp getting underway on Wednesday, it's almost decision time for the Commanders regarding potential reinforcements at wide receiver. And if Aiyuk is thinking about going on-site, he should think twice.
Because that might be the tipping point.
