It was an open secret for many months that disgruntled San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk would prefer to join the Washington Commanders in 2026. Now, it's no longer even a secret, and it feels like a matter of when, not if, it happens.
Still, all the control is in the Niners' hands, as they have not yet released the 2023 second-team All-Pro from his four-year, $120 million contract. Aiyuk and his employers are locked in a stalemate, and everybody is taking sides.
For one former star running back, he wants everybody to know exactly where he stands.
LeSean McCoy passionately defends Brandon Aiyuk amid 49ers-Commanders drama
LeSean McCoy, a 12-year NFL veteran and six-time Pro Bowler, is the latest media analyst to share his thoughts on the Aiyuk situation, via the Speakeasy podcast with Emmanuel Acho. The longtime Philadelphia Eagles ball-carrier did not mince words.
“I ain’t going to lie. He became my favorite wide receiver. I like it, man. It’s time to fight back. Don’t let these ownerships, just start to own you. Them days is over with.”

– @CutonDime25 weighs in on Brandon Aiyuk's recent video cheering and chanting like a member of the Washington Commanders

This comes after Aiyuk posted his latest Instagram video, in which he repeatedly chanted "Go, Commanders". He has made it known loud and clear that he wants to play with quarterback Jayden Daniels, his former Arizona State teammate, and the messy situation has officially reached nearly uncharted territory.
It is not normal for a player who is employed by one organization, who just recently signed a massive contract extension with that organization, to openly demand to be part of a different organization.
It's hard to imagine Aiyuk's behavior is doing him any favors around the league, and even the Commanders would be fair to question whether he is someone they want representing their franchise.
Don't tell McCoy, though.
To him, apparently, team owners forcing players to show up to work for the eight-figure salaries they make is some sort of oppression, and it's high time that they grab the power for themselves.
There are certainly two sides to the Aiyuk saga, and there's no doubt that once he is released, we will learn more about what has been going on from the Niners' end. Still, the fact remains that the wideout signed a massive extension while his relationship with the franchise was already deteriorating, only to never even play a single game on it.
All in all, it's an unenviable position for everybody involved, including Washington. And it's reached the point where even former Eagles legends just want to see Aiyuk in a Commanders uniform already.
