The plot has intensified regarding disgruntled San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who broke his silence through a series of Instagram posts.
He repeatedly trashed the organization for how his situation has been handled, while confirming what everyone already knew: the Washington Commanders are his preferred destination.
The 2023 second-team All-Pro has been linked to Washington because of his ties to quarterback Jayden Daniels, his close friend and onetime teammate at Arizona State. The Commanders have held off on making any big-name additions to their receiver room while they monitor Aiyuk's situation, unless third-round rookie Antonio Williams counts as one.
Brandon Aiyuk's relationship with Jayden Daniels shouldn't be enough for the Commanders
It's clear that both Washington and Aiyuk want each other, and the only holdup is on San Francisco's end. But for general manager Adam Peters, how badly does he want the wideout purely for the team's benefit, versus how badly he wants him just to please Daniels?
And... how badly does Daniels even want him?
Daniels has not spoken much about the saga, offering only a PR response when questioned about him during organized team activities. He hasn't been involved in the situation or actively campaigning to bring Aiyuk to Washington. And he's right to do so.
Anything less would only fan the flames further.
Inside, Daniels is almost certainly hoping the Commanders land Aiyuk when this is all said and done. But he's also mature enough to understand that the NFL is a business, not a charity for him. If Washington doesn't make a move, he's not going to raise a big stink over it.
That's precisely why the Commanders' brass needs to stop wasting their time and just leave Aiyuk alone.
He is a child throwing a tantrum. With seven games played in the past two seasons, he's not worth the trouble. What's going to happen when he gets unhappy in D.C., too?
The Niners have no incentive to meet Aiyuk's demands for a release or trade. They can place him on the reserve/left squad list, which would forbid any other team from adding him. And the more he publicly slanders the organization, the less inclined they'll be to let him walk to Washington.
The Commanders are no strangers to drawn-out wide receiver offseason dramas after Terry McLaurin's holdout last summer. That one was necessary in order to get a deal done with one of their star players. This is one they can choose not to be a part of, because Aiyuk is not yet on their team.
It's time to draw a line in the sand. Aiyuk doesn't get to threaten his way to Washington. No one — not even Daniels — is going to put up a fight if the Commanders say enough is enough.
Sign somebody else and be done with it.
