Brandon Aiyuk is waging all-out war on the San Francisco 49ers. While the wide receiver would probably have been better to stay quiet and let things play out, he feels stung enough by the franchise to declare it publicly with a verbal tirade on social media that only signifies the bitterness between both parties.
The Washington Commanders are innocent bystanders, yet they remain heavily connected to Aiyuk. Most around the league believe the wideout will reunite with quarterback Jayden Daniels at some stage. However, the Niners are not making it easy, even though this relationship has fractured way past the point of no return.
Insiders are expecting it to drag on throughout the summer. Aiyuk is getting impatient. As a result, he once again took to Instagram, claiming that all the blame should be on San Francisco's side.
Brandon Aiyuk's tirade means the Commanders could be waiting longer
Aiyuk believes the Niners are bitter because they've made some poor choices — paying him and then voiding his guarantees. Now, they are stuck with nowhere to go, according to the player, and he'll be on another team next season regardless.
“You wanna know why they really mad tho? They mad because they stupid. They mad because they paid me $50 million in eight months. And then voided my guarantees for 2027. And I’m about to be on a new team in 2026. They mad at themselves.”
There is plenty of blame to go around. Aiyuk's poor judgment cannot be completely ignored. The Niners are letting emotions get in the way, which is never good. But until they absolutely have to cut him loose, they won't.
This is a case of player power versus team resolve.
If the Niners give Aiyuk what he wants, which is basically gift-wrapping him to the Commanders and Daniels, it'll set a dangerous precedent. There will be 30 teams around the league hoping San Francisco holds firm, because they don't want this problem at their door in the future. At the same time, this has already become a distraction they don't need.
If the Commanders are interested in Aiyuk, as reported, all they can do is wait. General manager Adam Peters won't be trading for him unless there is a seismic shift in his thought process. It's a saga that's gotten way out of hand, but the Niners can hold firm as they focus on preparations for the new campaign.
Maybe Aiyuk showing up for training camp will help speed up his release, but he has to be cleared first. The Niners may be reluctant to do so, which only complicates matters. And when he does end up somewhere else, San Francisco could easily explore avenues to recover some of the money given to the player.
Aiyuk's social media outbursts are not going to move the needle where the Niners are concerned. He might think so, but the reality is quite different.
What a mess.
