Brandon Aiyuk mess leaves Commanders caught between fear and temptation

Not ideal, and opinions are divided.

The Washington Commanders are still hotly linked to wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. He remains under contract with the San Francisco 49ers, and they are dug in on making this a long ordeal unless general manager Adam Peters comes up with an acceptable trade offer.

That possibility might be further away than ever after Aiyuk made the headlines for all the wrong reasons once again.

According to reports, a warrant was issued for Aiyuk's arrest on an alleged exhibition of speeding misdemeanor, stemming from an Instagram post showing the wide receiver driving past Levi's Stadium in December last year. The complaint was executed on February 11 and filed on February 24, according to court documents.

Brandon Aiyuk's latest bad publicity reignited a Commanders debate that won't go away

Just why this is all coming out now is anyone's guess, but here we are.

Aiyuk brushed it off, posting a video of him going around a race track and hinting that some people are bitter about him taking off. That is unsubstantiated, of course, but it's only muddied the water further about what the future actually holds.

Opinions are varied. In all honesty, this was all predicated on which side of the fence you were on in the first place.

Some who don't want Aiyuk thought this was another reason for the Commanders to stay clear. Those who want him to reunite with quarterback Jayden Daniels in Washington don't believe this is much of a big deal. There is no real in between.

All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett has nine speeding incidents. Others have also been in the news for precisely this, as well as for much more serious allegations. While it's not ideal in the wideout's current predicament, it might not alter much for the Commanders in the grand scheme of things.

Aiyuk needs to get out of San Francisco and focus firmly on football again. That much is crystal clear.

These distractions are not doing him any favors, to put it mildly. Some have already proclaimed Aiyuk a lost cause who's throwing his career away. Others are convinced a fresh start with his close friend Daniels could help him get back on track.

Bad publicity at this stage is damaging. Aiyuk probably knew it was coming, but it was another poor judgment all the same. Critics add it to the list of questionable choices made by the former Arizona State standout over the last year. But good players always get the benefit of the doubt around the NFL.

There are still players in important roles who've earned a lot of money and done even worse. NFL teams will tolerate you until they can replace you, but nobody really knows what the Commanders have planned for Aiyuk.

That might change in the future. Then again, it might not.
