It was almost inevitable that Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels would be asked about Brandon Aiyuk after the first day of organized team activities. It was also inevitable that his comments would be dissected with a fine-tooth comb for any hidden messages.
Daniels didn't give much away. The signal-caller and Aiyuk are good friends who go way beyond football. But the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft made it crystal clear that the wideout's football future is out of his hands.
That didn't stop some in the media from speculating. And for one team pundit, Daniels' behind-the-scenes actions might be painting a very different picture.
Commanders analyst didn't quite buy Jayden Daniels' comments on Brandon Aiyuk
Grant Paulsen of 106.7 The Fan added his name to the growing list of those who believe Daniels is pushing for the Commanders to acquire Aiyuk, at least internally. While the LSU product toed the party line, so to speak, the deep connection between the two is obvious, and he will be there for him no matter what.
"Do I think behind the scenes, he's advocating to get [Brandon] Aiyuk? I'm sure he is, and has been for some time. But I found that answer interesting and notable. That he has a chance to go out there and say, "Yeah, let's bring him in. He's going to have a great rest of his career." I also found there was some empathy in there, too.
"He talks about "that's my brother. I love that guy." And he was pretty clear to say, "That's my guy, and I'm looking out for him." But then he separates it with "football career." As far as his football career, I can't really help him much there."

It's the classic tale of mixing emotion and business.
There is plenty of heat and bitterness in this ongoing saga, with the San Francisco 49ers stubbornly holding onto Aiyuk in the hope of securing a trade offer that probably won't arrive. The Commanders know he'll be released at some stage, and general manager Adam Peters is reportedly willing to wait it out without giving up draft capital.
That leaves Aiyuk in limbo.
There were no reports of him showing up to the start of San Francisco's OTAs, which wasn't surprising. All contact has been cut off, and the wideout is a non-factor in their new campaign plans. It might be a distraction they don't need, but the Niners' decision-makers do not want to set a dangerous precedent.
As Daniels said, it's all out of his hands. He's put in a good word for Aiyuk, and the Commanders are supposedly more receptive to the idea as a result. But as far as a timeline goes, he's got absolutely no say in the matter.
It's a waiting game. It's a game of chicken, and no side in this has blinked as yet. It might also go on for a long time yet if the Niners don't give up or the Commanders don't change their stance.
Time will tell how it ends up.
