The shockwaves are still reverberating from wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk's social media outburst, in which he claimed the San Francisco 49ers were scared to release him and that the "belt was coming" at some point. And one respected NFL insider left no doubt about the Washington Commanders' stance in this ongoing saga.

Aiyuk desperately wants out. The Niners are in no rush to remove him from the equation, even though he is no longer part of their plans. They are holding out for a trade partner, which will be difficult to attract given that the player has cut off all contact.

The Commanders are caught in the middle. Most around the league believe Aiyuk will reunite with quarterback Jayden Daniels. He's made no secret of his desire to join Washington, but general manager Adam Peters has not budged an inch as yet.

Commanders want to sign Brandon Aiyuk, but Ian Rapoport is expecting a long saga

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network and ESPN revealed that the Commanders would reportedly like to sign Aiyuk. Peters remains reluctant about trading for the wideout, and nobody is moving from their original thoughts. Unless there is a drastic shift, the insider expects this to go on for a while yet.

"They would like to trade him, probably to the Commanders, with his old friend Jayden Daniels. What the Commanders would like to do is sign him without having to trade for him.

"We're in a situation where nobody wants to move at all. They're all staring at each other. There's really no deadline to make a move, so until everyone gets tired of Brandon Aiyuk sending Instagram messages, this is going to be a storyline that takes us through the summer."

This isn't what fans who are clamoring for Aiyuk wanted to hear. But unless Peters throws a late-round draft pick this year or next to the Niners to speed up the process, general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have been stung enough to stay the course.

The Commanders won't be getting a sure thing with Aiyuk. He's missed a lot of time through injury, last seeing the field midway through the 2024 campaign. While reports suggest he is healthy and ready to return, it might take time for him to get back up to speed.

And if he arrives late, that's only going to complicate matters.

Aiyuk was obviously trying to force the issue by calling out the Niners. There is deep resentment, and there are also two sides to every story. But until they absolutely have to, San Francisco will not be doing the receiver any favors.

But if all this turbulence eventually leads to Aiyuk landing in Washington, it's a sacrifice the player is willing to make.
