Just when it looked like Brandon Aiyuk might be showing some restraint in his quest to get released by the San Francisco 49ers, the wide receiver flipped the script again. And not for the first time, the Washington Commanders were at the forefront of his mind.
Aiyuk seems to think that joining the Commanders is a done deal when the Niners eventually cut him loose. Just when that'll be hasn't been disclosed, but general manager Adam Peters has rightfully stayed silent amid the constant stream of rumors and speculation.
The former Arizona State standout once again took to Instagram, dancing about the prospect of landing with quarterback Jayden Daniels in Washington while also throwing more shade at San Francisco for its handling of the situation. Some of the statements contradicted what he's said previously, but who is really keeping track at this point?
Brandon Aiyuk might be making things more difficult for the Commanders to justify potential move
Aiyuk feels aggrieved. He feels there has been a smear campaign targeting him, designed to paint him in a bad light. The wideout isn't exactly covering himself in glory, but this is the route he has chosen to take.

Nobody knows what the Commanders make of all this.
Rumors are swirling about Aiyuk being on the East Coast, waiting to speak with Washington once the Niners eventually end this drawn-out saga. The accusations are tiresome, and the situation has gone way past breaking point. But he'll eventually get what he wants, provided he applies for reinstatement.
Then it'll be up to Washington to grant his wish.
Peters may decide to trust his instincts. He'll have all the desired information before making an informed judgment. Daniels is close with the player, but that cannot be enough. It's a feast-or-famine move with no real in between. Anything less than complete conviction makes this scenario less likely.
Aiyuk confirmed he was rehabbing away from the team. If there was any positive to take from his dancing, it's that the knee looked fine. That's something at least, but whether the Commanders are willing to overlook everything else around the 2023 second-team All-Pro is something else entirely.
There is no doubt Aiyuk would have been better off staying quiet and letting things play out. Just apply for reinstatement, show up for San Francisco's training camp, and the rest would take care of itself. But that was seemingly a little too simple and way under the radar.
The soap opera will continue for as long as he is under contract with the Niners. But for the Commanders, it's all about ignoring the noise and doing what's right for the team.
That might be giving Aiyuk a shot when the opportunity arises. Then again, it might not.
