Brandon Aiyuk is making noise. His social media activity left no doubt about his desire to join the Washington Commanders. There are murmurings about him being in Virginia right now, ready to lock things up quickly when he is eventually released by the San Francisco 49ers.
Most have deemed this scenario as a foregone conclusion. However, ESPN insider Adam Schefter didn't think it was quite a done deal just yet.
The connection between Aiyuk and the Commanders has been in place for months. Just how much longer the Niners will hold out remains to be seen, but the wideout's unnecessary outbursts on Instagram might only increase the resolve of head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch.
It won't prevent the overall outcome from becoming reality. It just means Aiyuk will have to wait a little longer.
Adam Schefter believes Commanders still have inner concerns around Brandon Aiyuk
Aiyuk wants Washington and nobody else; that much is clear. The Commanders are reportedly interested in reuniting the playmaker with quarterback Jayden Daniels. Even so, Schefter thought they may have concerns to alleviate before taking the plunge.
After speaking to people in Washington before the draft, Schefter got the sense they were not entirely comfortable with the possibility. Even though the Commanders might eventually gamble on Aiyuk staying healthy and keeping football the main thing, the senior insider thought these worries could potentially still exist.
"I even asked Washington their thoughts on signing Brandon Aiyuk, maybe for all we know they’re planning on doing it, but I know having spoken to them leading up to the draft, they had some questions at that point in time, and I would imagine they still exist.”
That might be true. But most fans are still expecting the same thing.
This has been his play the whole time Post June 1… make it so nobody else but the Commanders want you.

The draft was a while ago now. Things have moved on since then. The Commanders may still have doubts about acquiring Aiyuk, but this also undoubtedly represents the best possible situation to give his floundering career a fighting chance.
Aiyuk and Daniels have a close relationship, which should keep him focused. General manager Adam Peters would be placing a lot of faith in him, and their previous connection from their time together in San Francisco should make the pass-catcher eager to repay it.
There is also Wes Welker, his former wide receivers coach, on Washington's staff. He's got immensely high standards. He'll also know how to manage him effectively, as he did with Deebo Samuel Sr. last season.
Everything is in place. What comes next would be down to Aiyuk in this scenario.
All-Pro tight end George Kittle witnessed Aiyuk running at 22 miles per hour and cutting sharply out of his routes eight months ago. The chances are that he is even healthier now, and his previous chemistry with Daniels should ease his transition.
There are risks — a ton of them. Still, the rewards would be even greater if the Arizona State product returns to the player who gained second-team All-Pro honors in 2023.
Schefter cast some additional doubt, and the league isn't exactly looking favorably on Aiyuk right now. But as has been the case throughout this entire saga, the only opinions that matter are those in the building.
