The Washington Commanders had been in constant communication with veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs throughout the offseason. General manager Adam Peters bided his time, but ESPN insider Adam Schefter lifted the lid on why the front-office leader decided to act now.
Schefter, one of the most respected insiders in the business, hinted that other teams were also circling Diggs, including the Kansas City Chiefs. Washington was always his preferred landing spot, but the threat of other teams swooping in was clearly enough for Peters to give this move the green light.

And he was right to do exactly that.
"That was the place that made the most sense all along. The Chiefs weighed in. The Dolphins weighed in. The Raiders weighed in, but the Commanders were a team that had a need, had an opening, and they've been able to get together with Stefon Diggs to carve out a one-year deal to bring him to Washington to complement Terry McLaurin and make him the newest target for Jayden Daniels."
The Chiefs would have been a tempting proposition for Diggs. The Miami Dolphins and Las Vegas Raiders aren't expected to make many waves this season, but with quarterback Patrick Mahomes set for a Week 1 return, Kansas City was a different story.

Peters was always keeping tabs on the situation. He either got word from Diggs' representatives that an offer was imminent, or he sensed something building. Either way, the Commanders got their guy, and with the money involved, it sets up David Blough's offense perfectly for success.
The Commanders missed out on landing either Alec Pierce or Romeo Doubs in free agency. Instead of panicking, Peters bided his time. Washington reportedly identified Diggs as its primary target from a long way out, and when it started to look like interest from elsewhere would arrive, a deal was done.

This only adds to Peters' strong offseason. He relied too much on aging veterans chasing a ring last season, and the Commanders paid a heavy price. Lessons were learned, and the front-office supremo made the moves needed to make Washington younger and hungrier heading into 2026.
Diggs doesn't quite fit into that category. But in terms of short-term assistance with someone who demands nothing less than perfection, it's the perfect fit.
Though the Commanders' young pass-catchers have shown promise over the summer, moving forward with this group was simply a risk Peters couldn't take. Nobody outside of Terry McLaurin had any semblance of prolific production in the regular season, and everyone knew it. Fortunately, Washington had something up its sleeve.
And for Diggs, this is the homecoming he's wanted from the moment he was released by the New England Patriots despite going over 1,000 receiving yards.
The Commanders now have a legitimate 1-2 punch at receiver. They have a backfield committee that can set the tone. They have a dynamic tight end in Chig Okonkwo and an offensive line that should be formidable.
And of course, they also have Jayden Daniels under center.
Diggs won't solve every problem, but his presence will be a welcome boost. And Peters deserves praise for striking now to avoid any unnecessary complications.
