The Washington Commanders are in the market for a wide receiver. They tried to land Alec Pierce with a big-money deal before he opted to stay with the Indianapolis Colts. And now, reports suggest general manager Adam Peters has struck out on another possible option.
And it brings an uncomfortable truth fans won't like.
The Commanders have money to spend. However, having it and using it wisely are two very different things. Only three new arrivals have reportedly joined the ranks so far, all on the defensive side of the football. That will help, but it won't enhance the firepower around quarterback Jayden Daniels.
Pierce was the big prize, and the Commanders were in the mix. That didn't work out, which might not be a bad thing given the money involved. Still, a second productive pass-catcher has said thanks but no thanks to Washington's project.
Commanders get spurned by Romeo Doubs to continue concerning trend
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the New England Patriots have agreed to a deal with Romeo Doubs. It's a four-year, $70 million commitment, which is decent money for a wideout with his best years ahead. The dismay among Washington's fan base was immediate after the news broke, but Peters did try.
Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic reported that the Commanders were in the mix for Doubs, but he ultimately chose to join the AFC Champions. And if this continues much longer, questions will be asked.
Was told Washington was also in on WR Romeo Doubs before he agreed to a deal with the Patriots.

Peters chose to run it back with the large majority of those who helped Washington reach the NFC Championship game last year. His free agent signings, aside from Javon Kinlaw, consisted of aging veterans on one-year deals. It failed miserably, and being spurned by the top-tier wideouts hints that this project is not as attractive as some connected with the club believe.
Dan Quinn could be seen as a lame duck head coach. Daniels' injury problems last season may be playing a part. But for Doubs, getting the chance to work for Mike Vrabel and catch passes from Drake Maye was a more enticing proposition.
For Peters? It's back to the drawing board.
The Commanders are seeing their primary targets sign with other teams. He's passed over legitimate, affordable options, such as linebacker Devin Lloyd, who joined the Carolina Panthers. The free-agent process is still in its infancy, but fans are growing increasingly restless.
This signifies the pressure on Washington's power brokers to get things right. But being overlooked by both Pierce and Doubs is an early gut punch that demands a positive response.
