It's over.

All the debates, all the confusion, and all the hearsay about what the future holds for quarterback Jayden Daniels over the final three games have been put to rest. And Washington Commanders fans will not see their franchise player under center again until 2026.

Daniels reaggravated an elbow injury during his first game back against the Minnesota Vikings. He was reportedly cleared to come back, but head coach Dan Quinn opted against it. That's just as well, because he wasn't cleared for contact just a few days later and was ruled out of Washington's game at the New York Giants in Week 15.

Commanders finally make the right call by shutting down Jayden Daniels

Now, the Commanders have taken things one step further. According to Ian Rapoport from the NFL Network, those in power have admitted defeat, shutting Daniels down for their three remaining regular-season engagements. Marcus Mariota will see things through this season, giving him another audition to secure a starting spot elsewhere in 2026.

"The Commanders have decided to shut down QB Jayden Daniels for the final 3 games, turning his focus to supporting Marcus Mariota. Daniels was re-evaluated today & not yet cleared. With him expected to be medically ruled out vs. the Eagles, then facing a short week vs. the Cowboys on Christmas, the final decision was made today."

Quinn revealed that the decision was part medical, part team. The risks far outweigh the rewards, especially with nothing to play for other than pride. There is nothing wrong with living to fight another day, and the Commanders' offense is functioning well enough with Mariota under center.

This brings the curtain down on a nightmare sophomore campaign for Daniels. He wasn't playing particularly well even before his injury problems began. A knee sprain was followed by a low-grade hamstring strain. His dislocated elbow was the most gruesome of all, and even though the former LSU sensation came back, it was ill-advised.

There is just no telling what the repercussions would be if Daniels played again this season and suffered more damage. The Commanders are playing the long game, and rightfully so. They aren't getting anything from this season, and the constant doubt is only adding to the frustration. Now, there is clarity, and everyone can move forward accordingly.

Daniels is a competitive guy. You have to feel for him, but deep down, he will know that it's the right call. It will also make him even more determined to succeed when the 2026 campaign begins.
