The Redskins have a chance to end the first half of the season at 6-2 today.

No matter what happens, the Washington Redskins will still maintain the lead in the NFC East at the end of the day, but capitalizing on a three-game winning streak and besting the Atlanta Falcons would be a huge boost for the burgundy and gold.

On paper, and at first glance, it would seem that the Redskins have a fairly good chance. The Falcons have a record of 3-4 after seven games, tied for third place in the NFC South. Their defense has allowed 212 points so far, averaging to just over 30 points a week.

While the Falcons have clear weaknesses after losing several impactful to season-ending injuries, they still have plenty of firepower on the offensive side of the ball. Matt Ryan has quietly regained his MVP-season form, and he has the likes of Julio Jones, Calvin Ridley, Mohamed Sanu, and Austin Hooper to choose from, when considering his targets.

The pressure will be on for the Flight Marshals this afternoon, who have gained a bit more notoriety after the stellar early play of D.J. Swearinger and the recent acquisition of former Pro Bowl safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. Today, Swearinger and Co. will look to prove that those kinds of reputations don’t take rest.

In a sense, the NFL is unique. In a sixteen-game season, every game takes on increased importance. Teams don’t have as much flexibility, or as much time to rebound and compensate for slow starts. In a volatile sport, the Washington Redskins have a winning streak on their hands. They’d do well to keep it going today.
