When veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs scored a touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Washington Commanders needed a two-point conversion to tie things up. He then jumped on the goalpost, taking them out of range, and his post-game excuse sent the exact wrong message.
Diggs claimed it was a heat-of-the-moment incident and that he simply forgot the rule had changed since earlier in his career. Just a complete lack of awareness from a savvy veteran player who should, frankly, know better.
And it didn't wash.

The Commanders ended up losing the contest by two at Lincoln Financial Field when they couldn't complete a two-point try after rookie wideout Antonio Williams went in for six. But if they had gotten two bites of the apple, things might have been different.
Diggs's erratic celebration put a damper on that. And with quarterback Jayden Daniels and head coach Dan Quinn calling him out after the contest, this cannot happen again.
Football is an emotional game. Diggs is a fiery character who wears his heart on his sleeve. But considering the 'Jimmy Graham Rule' regarding touching the goalposts during celebrations came into effect in 2014 — one year before he was drafted — the excuse he gave carried no weight whatsoever.

It was a stupid moment. And it cost the Commanders.
This is the sort of petulance Diggs has been eager to avoid in recent years.
Commanders need Stefon Diggs to be more aware and disciplined moving forward
Reports were glowing about his ability to lead and mentor throughout his short stints with the Houston Texans and New England Patriots. This convinced the Commanders to give him a shot, and his summer impression vindicated their decision after he slotted into the locker room culture seamlessly.
Diggs actually played pretty well on his Washington debut, bringing in four targets for 55 receiving yards and a score. But this is a massive stain on his efforts, and his bizarre reasoning in the immediate aftermath made it even worse.
The former Maryland standout knows full well what the rules are. Diggs has scored enough touchdowns throughout his prolific career for any other conclusion, in all honesty. It was a sloppy mistake that he might have brushed off, but it mattered.
And the Commanders had far too many of them when victory was there for the taking at Lincoln Financial Field.
If Diggs had just apologized and said it was a moment of madness amid his excitement about securing his first touchdown for Washington and left it there, that would have been better. Instead, the four-time Pro Bowler claimed he forgot a rule that was in place before he played a competitive NFL snap.
That statement wasn't going to fool anybody, even in Diggs' younger days. He's an elder statesman now, at least in NFL terms, and he needs to start acting like it.
Because this was completely unacceptable.
All this does is stir up more headlines around Diggs, who's never been short of controversy throughout his career. He needs to put it right by staying disciplined and showing out on the field, starting this weekend against the Dallas Cowboys.
This was a bad look; there's no getting away from that. But Diggs has got a lot of games left to right the wrong.
