The Washington Commanders faced a tough start to their 2026 season on the road against the Philadelphia Eagles. But despite a valiant effort, they ultimately fell agonizingly short.

Head coach Dan Quinn is under pressure to make the desired improvements. The Commanders weren't at their best, especially early on. However, the Eagles weren't exactly firing on all cylinders either, as both teams looked to shake off the rust. 

It came down to the fine margins. The Commanders fought right until the end, and they came within a two-point conversion of tying things up with a minute remaining.

But unfortunately, it wasn't to be.

There are things to work on. There were also more than a few positives to take from the game. And after an opening day defeat, next weekend's clash against the Dallas Cowboys becomes even more integral.

Mike Sainristil's shaky start

Mike Sainristil is under a lot of pressure entering the season. The third-year cornerback needs to become more consistent to cement his status as a long-term piece of the puzzle, but this was not a good day at the office for the 2024 second-round pick out of Michigan.

Sainristil looked lost. He gave up a big play to Dontaviyon Wicks that led to a score. He then gave up a touchdown to the same player when he didn't get on the correct side of leverage in the red zone.

This was deeply disappointing. And a big effort is already needed to turn things around.

Tyler Owens is a special teams force

With Nick Bellore retiring just before the start of training camp, the Commanders needed someone else to step up and become a dominant force on special teams. Based on this, that guy could be rising defensive back Tyler Owens.

The Texas Tech product was relentless. Owens' effort was nothing short of exceptional, making big plays and giving the Eagles' special teams unit nightmares almost from start to finish. While his opportunities on the defensive rotation were once again limited, his stock only went up at Lincoln Financial Field.

Owens has too much athleticism to waste. And this was a tremendous start for the 2024 undrafted free agent.

Commanders offensive line was overwhelmed

Nobody needs to tell Commanders fans about the offensive line concerns. They lost Laremy Tunsil to a torn triceps, and the gamble at center could legitimately go either way. It's a wait-and-see scenario, but the protection in front of quarterback Jayden Daniels looked overwhelmed for the most part.

The Eagles managed to get considerable pressure by rushing just four. Daniels was constantly moved off his spot, and more defenders at the second and third levels made it difficult for the wide receivers to get open.

This group has to be better. Otherwise, it won't take long for things to unravel.
