There seems to be a different rumor and a different wide receiver connected to the Washington Commanders every day. General manager Adam Peters is supposedly looking for another productive veteran, but with radio silence from the franchise, speculation is only growing.

Another name entered the mix, courtesy of ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler. However, he also got the sense that there was not much to it.

And fans should be thankful for that.

Fowler revealed during a conversation with The Sports Junkies on 106.7 The Fan that the Commanders have been "implicated" in talks for Keenan Allen over the last few weeks, according to his sources around the league. Shortly after, he also said that there was "nothing going on" between both parties.

Commanders have moved away from signing players like Keenan Allen, and that should continue

Allen is one of the big-name wide receivers still looking for work. He was an elite route-runner in his prime, a six-time Pro Bowler with 12,051 receiving yards and 70 touchdowns in 13 seasons. The 2013 third-round pick was also productive for the Los Angeles Chargers last season, gaining 777 yards and four scores.

There are few free agents who boast his career credentials. But he's now 34 years old, and this is exactly the sort of move Peters has gone away from this offseason.

The Commanders pushed their chips into the middle with aging veterans chasing a ring last season, resulting in five wins, countless injuries to key personnel, and a blossoming team losing its edge. Peters has shifted course, and even though Allen could potentially help, it just sends the wrong message.

This may also be why the Commanders have not taken the plunge with Stefon Diggs, either. He's made no secret of his desire to join Washington for a homecoming, but nothing has materialized. That could change, but if this was something Peters was seriously considering, the chances are it would have happened already.

Allen will probably have a new home by the time Week 1 rolls around. A contending team looking for another dependable weapon in a complementary role seems feasible, but asking him to be a WR1 or even a WR2 these days is unrealistic.

Looking at the concerns behind Terry McLaurin in the wideout unit, the Commanders could be seeking a little more from any new recruit.

Peters will have targets. He will have a plan in place. He also won't reveal anything unless it's warranted, which makes it a guessing game for everyone else.

And it will be intriguing to see what (if anything) is done to rectify this potential issue.
