Treylon Burks made an impressive start on the first day of Washington Commanders training camp. Unfortunately, it came at a price.
Head coach Dan Quinn confirmed to reporters before Day 2 that Burks was now dealing with some foot soreness. The issue isn't expected to be too serious, and the Commanders are rightfully erring on the side of caution with Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles still some way off.
This is disappointing, not least for Burks.
He is finally starting to gain some positive momentum after a luckless spell with the Tennessee Titans. The last thing he needs is a nagging injury holding him back for too long.
Treylon Burks is sitting out with foot soreness, but the Commanders don't seem overly concerned
There is no strain or muscle pull, but Burks felt something that warranted sitting out. Just how long that'll be for remains to be seen. However, the former Arkansas playmaker will be eager to get back onto the practice field as soon as possible.
Burks left his mark on Day 1. The wideout looked sharp, was a favorite target of quarterback Jayden Daniels, and came up with a highlight-reel grab in the end zone to round off an exceptional session. He is on the right track to feature heavily within David Blough's system if the same trend continues, and hopefully, the 2022 first-round pick can stay healthy for the most part.
That's always been the big question with Burks. He's got the talent, and his physical gifts make him a matchup nightmare when firing on all cylinders. Unfortunately, his career to date has been very stop-start, but there are definite signs of life building in Washington.
It's no secret that the Commanders have questions to answer in their receiver room. Burks is among those challenging to become the WR2 opposite Terry McLaurin, but he's not alone. Others will also fancy their chances of increased involvement, which only raises urgency to make a swift recovery this summer.
Again, this is just precautionary.
Quinn has time on his side, and there is no point pushing Burks to even more discomfort. That could make things even worse, and considering injuries were the primary reason he fell so flat in Tennessee, taking the conservative approach is the right call.
Hopefully, Burks will be right in a couple of days, and he can continue his intriguing growth this summer. It's not hard to see why some are concerned after everything he's been through in his career, but Quinn didn't seem overly worried about his long-term outlook.
And if anyone deserves some good fortune from here on, it's Burks.
