The Washington Commanders remain hotly linked to more wide receiver help before the new season. General manager Adam Peters has not moved on any rumors as yet, and he may not do so at all if the young pass-catchers behind Terry McLaurin continue to flourish.
It's a precarious situation. It's also hard to gauge what's going on in the building. However, where free-agent veteran Stefon Diggs is concerned, he remains somewhat bullish about a possible homecoming.
Diggs is looking for work after he was released by the New England Patriots. His production remained solid last season, going over 1,000 receiving yards, but the AFC East club thought making A.J. Brown their marquee WR1 was a better direction. That was fair, and the All-Pro is now taking his time before choosing a new destination.
Stefon Diggs once again highlights his desire to join the Commanders
The former Maryland star made no secret of his desire to speak with the Commanders regarding a possible homecoming. Diggs is intrigued, and he wouldn't have any pressure to be the leading man with McLaurin around. He is working things out right now, but the wideout once again reaffirmed his stance on possibly joining in the not-too-distant future.
“It’s a lot of hopes. We’re kind of figuring it out, working through some things. I did have a small piece of me, like damn, it would be great to come home and play in front of the fans that I played in front of as a young adolescent in college and just doing something for the city. That definitely would be a moment. Hopefully, things do work out. We'll see how it goes, but I'm kind of open right now."
Diggs is clearly trying to force the issue. Even so, Peters hasn't shown his hand one way or another.
A successful resolution to his legal problems didn't come with any confirmed switch. Perhaps teams were waiting for the NFL's ruling, but there are zero concerns on that front either after Diggs was informed there would be no action taken.
And yet, he is still waiting.
Although Diggs is hopeful about landing in Washington, there is no confirmation yet on what is happening behind the scenes. Peters is reportedly looking, and there is interest in Brandon Aiyuk. But there is also hope around breakout candidates lower down the depth chart within David Blough's schematic concepts.
Much will depend on the money involved. The Commanders have enough to sign both Diggs and Aiyuk if they wish. That might leave others out of luck, but the stakes are way too high next season to bank on unknowns.
Diggs won't wait around forever, but the fact that he continues to drop breadcrumbs about joining the Commanders leaves little doubt that this is his preferred option.
Let's see if he gets his wish.
