Brandon Aiyuk and Stefon Diggs are both reportedly interested in joining the Washington Commanders. General manager Adam Peters is rumored to be looking for wide receiver help, so it's not hard to connect the dots here.
However, the front-office leader hasn't given anything the green light as yet.
Information is being gathered, and Peters is waiting for the right moment to strike. Washington is a tight ship under his regime, so nobody knows what's truly going on behind the scenes as speculation continues to soar.
NFL analyst urges Commanders to go with Stefon Diggs over Brandon Aiyuk
One respected NFL analyst had his say. And he was leaning towards Diggs over Aiyuk.
Barry Svrluga of The Athletic thought giving Diggs a chance while staying clear of Aiyuk was the most sensible option from Washington's standpoint. Both players have baggage, and the lack of dependable options outside of Terry McLaurin is concerning. From a recent production perspective, the former Maryland star is a safer bet in his eyes.
"The experimenting, for the moment, is with a bunch of guys who collectively warrant a shrug of the shoulders. The recommendation here: Stay away from [Brandon] Aiyuk, but take a shot at [Stefon] Diggs. [Terry] McLaurin may be back and healthy and prepared to play in 17 games for the fifth time in the past six seasons. Even if he does, he needs help — the kind of help that hasn’t yet arrived in Ashburn."
Aiyuk has made plenty of headlines in recent days. He is desperate to leave the San Francisco 49ers, but they are holding onto him in some veiled hope that a trade partner can be found. And he won't even get the chance to show up for work after head coach Kyle Shanahan bizarrely canceled their mandatory minicamp.
Until Aiyuk is not on the Niners, it's a waiting game. Diggs is available right now.
The four-time Pro Bowler is working out while waiting for the right offer to come along. Diggs' legal troubles are now over, so it might not be much longer before he finds a new home. He's outlined the intrigue around playing closer to home at this relatively late stage of his career, but the interest has been one-sided for now.
There is a chance that changes in the future. But if the Commanders want to bring Diggs in for a visit to see what he could potentially bring to the offense, Peters must act quickly.
Aiyuk's connection to quarterback Jayden Daniels makes his arrival almost inevitable when the Niners eventually cut ties, but he is no sure thing. Washington has the cash available for both, though this scenario would suggest a distinct lack of confidence in the young hopefuls vying for greater involvement under offensive coordinator David Blough.
It's tiresome, distracting, and tedious for fans. But the smart money still points to one of them being in a Washington uniform next season.
