Commanders shouldn't waste a single second on the Jayden Daniels controversy

Jayden Daniels is focused on football and not much else right now. The Washington Commanders are expecting a bounce-back campaign from their quarterback, and the signs throughout the summer suggest he is more than capable of meeting this goal.

The knives have been out for Daniels this week, following a public spat with LSU over the use of his name, image, and likeness. But former Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III's claim that this will be a massive distraction for the player and the Commanders just weeks before the season is way off the mark.

Griffin and Daniels have drawn comparisons, especially after the No. 2 pick in 2024's injury problems last season. That's about where it ends, but it doesn't stop RGIII from commenting on everything and anything associated with Washington's franchise player.

It's a way to stay relevant, I guess.

What it completely ignored was Daniels' response on Instagram or the way he's approached his third NFL offseason.

Daniels has been focused, sharp, and surgical. He's growing in confidence within offensive coordinator David Blough's system, and the timing on show with his primary pass-catchers couldn't be more encouraging.

This problem with LSU, probably dictated by Daniels' representation rather than anything specific to the player, means absolutely nothing by comparison.

Nothing.

Everyone has an opinion. They couldn't wait to tear Daniels down when the news became public. It's a sign of the times, where hot takes are king and being loud is more important than being right.

But after a short social media message, Daniels will get back to the business at hand. Anyone who thinks differently has not paid close enough attention to his career so far.

Daniels is driven. He loves the game. It's his biggest passion, his biggest desire, and his biggest concern. Everything else, including appearances in front of the media, is nothing more than an obligation.

If anything, this storm is only going to make Daniels more aloof with news outlets. And quite frankly, who can blame him?

Not a single person associated with the Commanders should care about this at all. And I cannot overstate that enough.

The talking heads want their pound of flesh, but it's meaningless. Today's controversy is tomorrow's waste paper. Everyone in the building knows the sort of character Daniels is, and this doesn't change that. Saying this will distract him from the task at hand is asinine.

Daniels may have been disrespected by LSU giving his No. 5 to cornerback D.J Pickett, but there was nothing about that in the original document. Everyone jumped the gun with wild accusations and worried about the rest later. But the signal-caller's statement should be enough to close the book.

It won't be. But it should be.

Both sides are probably in the wrong. But in terms of the football aspect of things, Daniels is not going to deviate. He's been on a tear this summer, and if he stays healthy, this trend will continue during the regular season.

This is all that matters to Washington. Nothing more, nothing less.
