It's no secret that the Washington Commanders are on the lookout for more wide receiver help. Reports indicate a legitimate No. 2 to go alongside Terry McLaurin is essential, though the team has high hopes for third-round rookie Antonio Williams after taking him No. 71 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft.
While there is optimism around Williams, asking him to be a WR2 right out of the gate is unfair and unrealistic in equal measure. There is obvious speculation around Brandon Aiyuk, but he's still under contract with the San Francisco 49ers. Stefon Diggs is available right now.
But one team insider got the sense that wouldn't be the case for much longer.
Clock is ticking for the Commanders as Stefon Diggs rumors swirl
John Keim of ESPN outlined the potential pros and cons of signing Diggs. One figure who used to work in Washington noted how the Pro Bowler could provide an immediate impact while Williams develops. Another source said that he might not be on the market for long, now that his legal issues have concluded.
So if the Commanders want him, they'd better act quickly.
"As one person who used to work for Washington said, [Stefon] Diggs gives the coaches a player who can make an immediate impact; he can play in the slot or the flanker position in a two-receiver set. It also would give the rookie [Antonio] Williams a chance to develop.
"He will turn 33 in November and Washington has shied away from signing older players this offseason. Typically, [Adam] Peters has signed players over 30 to one-year deals. With fewer questions about Diggs and more recent production, one league source said, there should be more teams interested in him."
Diggs recently indicated that joining the Commanders is intriguing and that he plans to explore the possibility. He hails from the region, so playing closer to home at this late stage of his playing career could be enough to tip the scales. Whether general manager Adam Peters reciprocates this intent is another matter entirely.
There is baggage. Diggs has a reputation for making life difficult when things aren't going well or when he isn't getting enough football. That tide seemed to turn with the New England Patriots last season, but it's also worth noting that they made the Super Bowl by winning the AFC.
The former Maryland star would also not be the alpha receiver in Washington. That's Terry McLaurin, so he would need to accept being part of the plan rather than the focal point to make this scenario a reality.
It'll be interesting to see what unfolds. Diggs will take his time before choosing the next stop. But now that the off-field troubles are over, it does make a lot more sense.
However, Peters may not agree. And this is the only opinion that counts.
