Commanders insider pours cold water on tempting Jayden Daniels reunion

There is no real interest, for now.

All the talk has centered on whether Brandon Aiyuk or Stefon Diggs will join the Washington Commanders at some stage before the 2026 campaign. However, there were quiet murmurings around another potential wide receiver option entering the mix.

Kayshon Boutte has a previous connection to quarterback Jayden Daniels from their time together at LSU. He's currently looking for a new deal, but the wideout appears lower down the New England Patriots' pecking order than ever after the AFC East club ended months of speculation by trading for A.J. Brown.

Inevitably, people have drawn their own conclusions about Boutte being the odd man out, leading to trade rumors surfacing. But according to a respected Commanders insider, Washington may not get involved if New England makes him available.

Commanders have not expressed an interest in Kayshon Boutte as yet

Ben Standig, formerly of The Athletic and now covering the team independently, reported, citing sources, that the Commanders have not yet expressed interest in acquiring Boutte. That doesn't mean they won't in the future, but nothing is seemingly imminent.

"Another possibility is trading for Kayshon Boutte, the 23-year-old Patriot now buried on New England’s depth chart. According to a source close to the situation, Washington has yet to express interest in [Jayden] Daniels’s former LSU teammate."

Trading for players is something Peters has gone away from this offseason. The 2027 draft class should be nothing short of exceptional, so giving away picks for veterans may not be the wisest thing for his long-term planning. It's not completely off the table, but there is clear contentment with the receivers currently available.

That remains a subject of fierce debate, but the Commanders are not going to force the issue.

Peters won't be signing or trading for anyone just for the sake of it. Any new addition has to be the right guy, and the pass-catchers behind Terry McLaurin are showing enough over OTAs to raise confidence, even if bigger challenges are coming.

Boutte is a good player. He worked his way from an undrafted free agent to a dependable weapon with the Patriots. At the same time, this may not be the needle mover Washington needs to go alongside McLaurin.

Diggs and Aiyuk have much better production, though the latter hasn't been seen on the field since 2024. Boutte is younger with arguably a little more upside, but he'd cost a lot more in draft compensation.

There is much more urgency outside the building to find receiver assistance than there is from within. Washington's reported stance on Boutte is another prime example of this fact.
