Blockbuster NFL trade hands Commanders a fascinating new option

Dan Graziano believes it makes sense.

The Washington Commanders are currently the subject of constant speculation linking the club to either Brandon Aiyuk or Stefon Diggs. However, one respected insider dropped some breadcrumbs about another possibility who might be available.

Aiyuk has been in the headlines again, being painted in a bad light. Diggs is supposedly keen on a homecoming to the Commanders, but general manager Adam Peters has not shown his hand on that front, either. This indicates a level of confidence in the current wide receiver room, or he might be waiting for other opportunities to upgrade the unit.

There are many unknowns, and that's likely to remain the same. Peters isn't known for disclosing much information to the media, and the Commanders are a tight ship with very few leaks under his leadership. But that didn't stop ESPN insider Dan Graziano from touting a trade possibility at some stage before Week 1.

Dan Graziano names Commanders among two landing spots for Kayshon Boutte

Graziano thought Kayshon Boutte could be the New England Patriots' odd-man-out after they traded for A.J. Brown. He's currently looking for a new deal, and if the AFC East club decides to get something back in return, the insider thought the Commanders and Las Vegas Raiders stand out as teams who could take the plunge.

"The Patriots have received calls on [Kayshon] Boutte and likely will continue to do so. And as always, unless and until we see a contract extension, we're justified in wondering whether the player is in the team's long-term plans. The Raiders and Commanders stand out as two teams that could still use help at wide receiver."

Peters has moved away from trading to fill roster holes this offseason. Nobody expected anything less after how things unfolded during the previous campaign, so it would be surprising if he shifted course now. At the same time, Boutte has some useful traits and youth on his side.

Boutte's been a modest contributor over the last two seasons in New England, going over 500 receiving yards with nine combined touchdowns during that span. He's fought hard to establish himself as an undrafted free agent out of LSU, and he wants to be paid. The Patriots haven't budged as yet. Now they have Brown, they might not bother at all.

Much would depend on the compensation. Peters won't be giving up his high-end capital for anyone as he looks to build the right way. But if the Patriots are willing to accept a mid-to-late round pick for Boutte, that might be enough to provoke a conversation between those in power.

It seems highly unlikely. But as the NFL has proven once again this week, nothing should be completely dismissed.
