The Washington Commanders remain embroiled in speculation around wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Through no real fault of their own, the wide receiver has made it clear that this is his preferred destination once he is finally released by the San Francisco 49ers.
But is the feeling mutual?
Aiyuk has been on a social media tirade in recent weeks, launching scathing attacks on the Niners and his former representation for their handling of the situation. He’s received public backlash, with former players and experts blasting the Arizona State product for airing his grievances.
What the Commanders make of this is the critical element of this equation. One team insider tried to wrap her head around the issue, believing that Aiyuk’s posts may not look favorably on his chances of reuniting with quarterback Jayden Daniels.
Commanders may be put off by Brandon Aiyuk's social media rants, but they may not
Nick Jhabvala of The Athletic once again confirmed that the Commanders had interest in Aiyuk, and that might still be the case. However, the Instagram rants may also increase uncertainty about taking the plunge.
"There’s a lot to unpack and plenty of reason for the Commanders to have trepidation in taking him on, if there’s still interest. He has seemed to achieve what he wants by drawing headline after headline with his social media posts, but the long-term prospects of a return no longer seem as promising."
It's a fair assessment. General manager Adam Peters doesn't just jump into things. There will be investigations and conversations, and he'll constantly monitor Aiyuk's actions before he becomes available. He's not coming across well right now, but there are always two sides to every story.
The off-field antics could be overlooked if the Commanders were convinced Aiyuk can return to his second-team All-Pro form. He'd also have Daniels, Peters, and Wes Welker as trusted associates he's worked with previously to keep him in line. And being out of the game for so long has obviously given him a big chip on his shoulder.
But that is not guaranteed.
Aiyuk's last productive season was in 2023. He's dealt with a severe knee injury since then. He hasn't played a competitive snap since Week 7 of the 2024 campaign. Though the wideout is supposedly healthy and sharp, nobody knows for sure.
While free-agent veteran Stefon Diggs is putting out videos showcasing explosive route-running and fluid movement before his next opportunity arrives, Aiyuk has gone in a different direction. His frustrations have boiled over, but this way of doing things is only going to further infuriate the Niners.
And he doesn't care.
This would be an epic gamble from Peters. That's the only sure thing of this dramatic soap opera, and he knows it. But if the reference from Daniels is glowing, Aiyuk displays a willingness to fit in, and the medical checks are positive, that might be enough to take the risk when the opportunity presents itself.
It could go the other way. If Peters has even the slightest doubt, he should resist the urge. And where that would leave the player is anyone's guess.
Fans are growing tired. They just want an end to all the speculation and hearsay. It's not hard to understand why.
