Brandon Aiyuk’s scorched-earth act gives Commanders another reason to stay silent

Brandon AIyuk has been on a tirade in recent weeks.

Brandon Aiyuk has broken his silence on what really went down with the San Francisco 49ers. The wide receiver's public outbursts against the club were turned up a notch, but what this means for his desired switch to the Washington Commanders remains a topic of debate.

Aiyuk was less than complimentary about his former agent, general manager John Lynch, and head coach Kyle Shanahan. He reaffirmed that there is no chance of turning out for the club again, and the next time he'll be at Levi's Stadium will be for the Commanders' clash with San Francisco on Monday Night Football in Week 6.

Or so he hopes.

It's hard to know what the Commanders are thinking behind the scenes. If Aiyuk didn't have a strong connection with quarterback Jayden Daniels, this would be an easier problem to walk away from. That's not the case, and if the former Arizona State standout is healthy, he could upgrade the spot opposite Terry McLaurin.

Commanders must tread carefully as Brandon Aiyuk turns up the heat

There are a lot of ifs and maybes in this situation. And if Aiyuk wants to get a quick release from the Niners, he's not going to be the best way about it.

He's under contract. The Niners can be as petty as they want, especially given they know Washington may be his first call after any release is confirmed. They want to make an example out of Aiyuk, and the player's frustrations are now coming to the boil.

Criticizing Lynch and Shanahan isn't the smartest move. They still control his destiny to a certain extent, and making things worse is only going to solidify their resolve.

The Niners could wait until the end of August before eventually cutting ties. Insider reports suggest it's much sooner, but if the decision-makers in San Francisco feel further aggrieved by the way Aiyuk is going about his business with no real representation, they are not losing anything by keeping him on the books.

It's delaying the inevitable, and Aiyuk is not part of their future. But they are not going to succumb to his public backlash until they are ready.

As for the Commanders? They might make an approach for Aiyuk when he hits the market. Nobody knows for absolute certainty, and his actions do raise some concerns, but his connection to Daniels and his previous relationships with both general manager Adam Peters and assistant coach Wes Welker make it an intriguing possibility.

The Commanders are in no rush, and Peters is right to take a silent approach to avoid potential tampering issues. He should have a clear idea of what happened on both sides of the story. But if Washington believes that Aiyuk can help them win football games, they'll give him a shot.

Aiyuk isn't doing himself any favors right now. And the longer it goes on, the worse it's going to get.
